This year when we went on a river cruise through France I decided to get my wife a small point and shoot with easy controls and a simple menu. I had my Nikon DSLR but the camera I got, a Canon PowerShot A1400, was perfect for her. It could fit in her handbag and it was easy to use. It also has a viewfinder which many inexpensive cameras don't have anymore. I also took it occasionally when I didn't want to lug a heavy camera with me, especially at night to a restaurant. I have seen it priced at 69.99 at various places and online. This may be good for the kids and it also took decent photos.
I've got a "tough" by Olympus for my purse camera, waterproof to 15', says it can be dropped from 5' without damage, under $200 at B&H. Takes nice photos & video. Do buy extra battery & charger.
Buy LIGHTLY used ones or the CHEAPEST available holiday point and shoots available.
I often give the CANON A series as gifts. Use AA batteries, reasonably good features and about $70. Current model is the A1400.
Nikon S30 or S31. Shock and waterproof to a point...
After you locate the camera's you might try sitting down with kids and discuss how to take care of them. I realize there are situations where that may not be feasible but it is worth a shot if you can pull it off. Have fun.
My quick advice would be the Canon A1300, now upgraded to the Canon A1400, probably to be replaced by the A1500 next year. It has a good MP number, and both an optical viewfinder and that dratted Live View viewfinder kids love. The optical viewfinder -- yes, you can look through it -- has a 5:1 ratio, meaning the camera has a roughly 28-150 or so mm equivalent. The camera takes SDHC cards, you can vary the JPG ratio, and is powered by two AA cells; there is no expensive proprietary battery. I noted WalMart the other day asking about $70 for it....of course, that's just after I bought an A1400 for $90 at Best Buy. I have both of the models, and keep one in each car as an "emergency" camera. The A1300 have proven to be a fine picture taker, and I expect the same from the A1400.
Enjoy!
Had I seen your reply before I send my post, I would have simply seconded the choice. Fine little camera.

It was my impression that Best Buy has a 30 day price guarantee policy. Most such policies by retail stores have limitations such as Pre- and Post-holiday prices cannot be compared, no can prices from different calendar years (you have to read the fine print). But you may still be able to get a partial credit (store credit; never cash) on your $90 purchase. Good luck.

I have a 13 & 14 year old grand kids that want a point and shoot camera for Christmas. Both have had similar camera and broke them. They want a camera somewhat better than the camera in their phone. I don't feel they will take any better care of a new camera and have considered not getting one.
What can you recommend for such a camera? Thanks
you said it in your first sentence . they both have had similar camera's and broke them . I don't care how old they were then. a 13-14 year kid will do the same thing with a $200 camera if you get them one . I would get them each a
$2 wallet with seven ten$ bills inside , or in a Christmas card ,and a web site to
b@h or adorama . and let them get what ever they want . at least that way when they destroy them it will seem like buy cheap get cheap . and I doupt they would blow it on a camera . the camera in there I phone is good for enough for any 13-14 year kid.
