I have a 13 & 14 year old grand kids that want a point and shoot camera for Christmas. Both have had similar camera and broke them. They want a camera somewhat better than the camera in their phone. I don't feel they will take any better care of a new camera and have considered not getting one.
What can you recommend for such a camera? Thanks

i noticed there are many good point and shoot coolpix nikon cameras that are fairly cheap and take some decent photos ..try going to best buy or even p c richards and play around with some of them to see which ones are in your price range..this is the best time to buy since all the sales are going on and they are usually clearing out the models for the newer ones coming out in january..some are as cheap as 70 bucks..its still a lot cheaper than some of the electronic gadgets the kids ask for these days

What kind of price point are you looking at for each camera?

Earlier there was a post on point and shoot camera review, which I thought was very good from B&H. Below is the web site.

I've not seen any under about $70 that I would consider, but would like one less than that. I've seen some off-brands for less than that..........
The 2 they had before was a Canon and a Nikon, don't remember the models.

The only one that I know of is Nikon Coolpix S31 which is shock proof and water proof, built especially for children. But it is a little more then you want to invest, it is on sale at Best Buy for 89 dollars. Good luck

There are several "ruggedized" point and shoot cameras available. At the ages you listed, that might be a viable option. Good luck, Santa --

I've been to Africa and back several times with a Nikon L26, 12MP, 5x zoom as my "emergency" camera, in case something happened to my good equipment. It uses standard AA alkaline, NiMh or Lithium batteries (you choose which you are using in a menu and it optimizes for that type). Had to loan it more than once to hapless souls whose cameras bit the dust and it was easy enough to learn that they brought back some great shots. I believe the L28 replaced it. It seems pretty rugged, but then, I'm pretty far away from being 13 years old. Should be around $80-90. Hope this helps...

I'm not sure of the prices, but most makers have "tough" cameras that can take abuse - and are also waterproof.

Research cameras first and pick out models that you think are possible choices and then look for those models as refurbished or clearance items on the manufacturer's website. Usually some very good deals out there, especially at this time of year. Amazon.com and Ebay are other alternatives you might consider for used, refurbished or "open box" items that can be had for a very good price.

Give them a gift card to Best Buy or Walmart, etc. They can then either get one you want to afford, or they can add their own money to it and get one they like.

Teens can be rough on equipment. Sounds to me you have a couple of options. Purchase cameras that are designed to resist the challenge of tough-on-gear teens, or go cheap and accept the fact they will trash them. There are several choices for each, but more choices for low-end cameras then the tough-builts. The post suggesting looking at refurbished models is a good one. You can find them from the original manufacturers as well as secondary sellers. Good hunting.
