I don't worry about getting a shot all the time. If something amazing happens and I don't have a camera with me, I just enjoy what is happening. :-)

Then why have a camera at all if that's the case? Just enjoy what is happening instead of capturing the moment! :)

You know I think about this issue often, one of the resons I just bought the Panasonic LX7 advanced compact. I noticed one thing about sites like this one that is geared for people who use point and shoots and Bridge cameras..... they never seem to argue or fret over what camera or lens.....flashes...post proccessing and ect. They seem to enjoy their Photography more than those on here who have Billions of dollars "invested" in epensive DSLR's. Point and shoot and bridge camera Photographer rarely have fights over silly things, they just seem to be happier people in my own opinion. :)

Just curious to know if any/many of you are considering ridding yourselves of the DSLR gear and other InterChangable Lens cameras, in favor of the lighter P&S gear? This thought seems to come on me every now and again, and is currently in one of it's "on" waves. I'm thinking that a good superzoom (there are a few to consider), and a good smaller camera, might be a bit more fun than hauling the bigger stuff around.
Just wondered if this feeling was mine alone or others have at least thought about it, OR had actually done it.
If so, care to share your thoughts, and/or your specific gear now in use?
Like I said....just curious.

It all depends on what you want to shoot and the kind of quality you want. I like crawling in the snow with a macro lens, and shooting sports. the weight is a bugger, but I have a really strong right arm.

There are situations where taking photographs becomes an important consideration, and I bring the big camera and the appropriate lenses. The rest of the time, I'm okay with not capturing the moment.

Yet, wouldn't it be nice if cell phone cameras had BIG sensors and quality zoom lenses to have with you for important shots? :)

I rely on DSLRs for serious shooting but my companion camera is a Nikon Coolpix P7000. It's a competent camera and I've achieved some remarkable results. Things I value: optical finder, manual capability, 28-200 f3.5, auto-bracketing, panorama mode to align successive shots, hot shoe, program for things like fire works, resolution for 16x20, and video capability - all for under $400. Canon makes a comparable G series camera. See video capability at

Also see pano

That said, I would not pay upwards of $1000 for some of the ILCs or ICL compacts when I could have a Nikon D7100 for the same price.

Don't look now but those days aren't that far away. Remember, it wasn't that long ago when most everyone said that digital will never equal the quality of film.

As for me as I get older the idea of one easy to use camera instead of my bag load of equipment becomes more and more appealing.

If the technological improvements to cell phone cameras are also applied to the big stuff, bigger will still win on image quality.

While digital has reached the quality of film, keep in mind that nobody has tried to make film better in about 20 years. Could they have made film even better than Velvia? Or better high ISO performance than some of the ISO 1600 films available then? Probably a little bit, but they were also starting to run into fundamental physics limitations. The same can happen with cameras, where noise becomes an issue as pixel size gets smaller and smaller. And with optics, there's still no getting around the light gathering abilities of a larger objective lens, the first piece of glass in the optical path.

I'd respond, but I think I've been philosophical enough for one thread. :-)

I think you are missing the point of my response, it's about portability of a small camera vs a LARGE heavy DSLR. Small cameras will in fact advance enough in image quality that most average users will find BIG cameras unnecessary and too cumberome to carry with you at all times. :)

We're already at that point for "average" users. :-)
