I would suggest you try to return the lens for a refund. The price you paid for it was outrageous. Please say you didn't buy it from someone on this forum.

Like others, my advise is to return the lens if you are not going to use it to focus manually and buy the G lens.

Sorry Marilyn, I got mine brand new from a local overpriced shop (supporting local first and all) for 145.00. Best advise is to exchange it for the one that will work on your camera. Take it back where you got it in other words or save it until you upgrade your camera body and get a camera it will work on.

You stated you bought it with the camera from best buy. They should take it back since it isn't intended to be used with the camera. Talk to a store manager and return the whole purchase if necessary and repurchase it again. this time with a afs lens, either the 35 or 50 1.8 g afs. Best Buy is usually quite good at returns when they miss sell. I bought the same lens you bought for my wife a few weeks ago for her d800, refered for $85. Great lens, just not the best choice for your camera.

No,I have had my camera for a few years.The lens I purchased from Best Buy via e-bay.Not the same as buying it from the store or I would go & exchange it in a minute!

Marilynn, if it is an AF-s lens it should work on the D5100. I have that camera and it requires the S lens (af motor in lens). Are you sure you have the AF switch on?

You should still be able to get a refund unless the lens was sold "as is" a term which must accompany any such sales by a US corporation, even if sold through a distributor. Having said that, it is becoming more and more apparent as time goes by that eBay is growing less purchaser friendly than when they started business and is siding with the seller in a larger percentage of cases.
