I want you to try something for me, close your weak eye and squint with your dominant eye, then look at the photo, what are the things your eye notices first while doing this?

I noticed the big tall green fir tree first, then the orange color. Am I observing right?

I see only positives about this.

. Again to me it's eather good , ok, or bad , it takes what it is , to be what it is
or it wouldent be what it is in the first place if some of the parts were changed. I wouldent change anything . I like this pic . change one thing and I may not .And every part in here should be here it's a perfect picture IMO.

We all observe slightly differently, of course, and that tall green tree is my intended focal point, so with you I have succeeded. Try that trick with the photo's and art pieces you view. :)

Thanks Pierre, but in this section one should clarify their critique, so if you have the time what positives do you observe? :-)

Well, I think this is very good critique and opinion and not amateurish at all. You are correct about that ripple, it cuts the photo into two halves and competes to be the subject. Actually, I did try and use the rule of thirds, but I may have not succeeded.

The lighting is okay but may have too much contrast. The sky has a small area that is slightly overexposed. Creative? I certainly tried, so thanks. Yes, it does tell a story.

Detailed and concise critique, you wetted your feet nicely.

I rather like the ripple(s). They add interest, and provide a nice punctuation point.

You just adore being contrarian don't you?

Teasing. :D

Thank you; I will. I always love learning new things. Hopefully this will help me with my own photography.

Ok, to be specific.
I very much like the clarity and the punch. It pulls me in to enjoy it.
The major elements are very well placed in the frame.
Your focus is excellent. The color has vibrance and yet is not overstated.
Graham's point is a matter of judgement but I prefer the way you have processed the image.
Obviously you have the skill to take top notch landscapes. That is a given. That talent should be reinforced. An image like this should not have to run a gauntlet of negatives just because this forum has C&C as it's raisin d'ĂȘtre.
I have no problem telling you I see only positives.

Pierre

Thanks for the detailed observations and compliments Pierre. I was actually trying to fish for some negatives, not compliments, but they are appreciated.

Bmac, while you do have some lovely colors and reflections going on here, I think that I would have waited for next autumn to capture this.

There are too many bare trees at this point.

I have a spot much like this, and I didn't photograph it when all the leaves were still on the trees this year because of the excessive algae. I wouldn't want algae on my water in a photo.

There is a distracting hunk of land wit dead grass in the bottom left corner.

Bmac, your photo has now been sliced and diced by some observers. Are you happy now? (I still like it, you can't convince me not to.) :P

Many reflection pictures, like this one, also have a strong symmetry component. So I don't think the rule of thirds is relevant. The subject was the evergreen and its reflection; the composition captures this very nicely.

I think the "ripple" in the center is actually lily pads. And they work with the symmetry. Their furthest extent acts as a pivot point for the evergreen and its reflection.

The sky might be a bit light as you said. And some work could be done to tease out some more definition in the clouds, but I'm not sure changing the sky in any way would improve the image. To me, it's not bright in a way that hurts the photo. The overall exposure looks good to me.

The colors and mix look just like my neighborhood these days.

I like it. Thanks for posting it.

and you caught it at the right time . A couple weeks early it would have been just a big orange blob. and a couple weeks later it would be too baren , with no contrasting colour to balance it .
