You gotta like it! Beautiful photograph. I'm reduced to nit picking so in that context . . . . .

The sun is too bright and could be toned down a tad. The image is divided in half by the horizon. Technically it would be better to crop out some sky or, alternatively, crop away some of the boardwalk and water.

This looks like a wonderful grab shot, so there was no hope for waiting until the sun was below the horizon. (No posing with moving boats.)

Having made those criticisms I wish I had taken this photograph.

My effort with GIMP:

Cropped away boardwalk and water but did not cut into wake of small boat. Made a selection around the sun with the Scissors Select tool, Feather radius 10; chose the paint brush and selected a color with white fading into yellow. Probably need to reduce the sun's glare more but I could not bring myself to do it.

Thank you. I was lucky to be there at that time.

Using ONLY HDR toning. Played with every slider. Have a go at it if you have HDR toning with your program.

Jam, when I opened the topic, I went Ooohhh right out loud :) And I love the two edits that have been done so far, as well. I'm sure there are dozens of versions that could work here, just your preference, though for me the crop would be the most important. Takes ooohhh to a higher octave :)

Nice job, Cajon. The HDR image is almost painterly.

This is a critique- where differing opinions are presented. You get to decide.

I personally find the reflections of the golden sun in the water and on the sailboat very interesting... I like your crop. The rule of thirds is about weight, your foreground- with the large sailboat "feels" like 2/3's and thus I think it balances well.

But I would definitely saturate the whole photo a bit, then pump up the blue reflection of sky in the water's dark side and enhance the blue in the sky between the clouds. Contrast of the darker side of the clouds. You have a wealth of details-

But I would not use too heavy hand- just a believable touch of enhancement. I tried- but I guess I'd need the RAW version the get to the colors I have mentioned. Bridge doesn't seem to be able to get to them.

You have a fine "sell-able" photo IMHO.

I personally like the sun as is as I can "feel" the temperature and intensity.

I love this. I looked at people's changes but still prefer the original. Beautiful shot! I admire it and after looking at the download, I would not change a thing.

WOW! I love this, I keep looking at it and the only nit I have to pick is that for some reason the high-rise hotel behind the sailboat seems to be calling out to be removed. I even like the HDR version, so, it seems that when you start with an amazingly good shot, it's tough to ruin. Congratulations on a very memorable photograph.

What you have done with the lighting here is wonderful. I love how you lightened the image making the bow of the boat appear to glow in the setting/rising sun.

I've looked at the original several times and at all of the edits, and though all are attractive, each in their own way, I prefer the original version. I think it is near perfect. Some of the others invoke a little more drama and might catch more eyes on a site like 500px where drama is king, but for a photo to frame and live with (or sell to someone else who might do that) I really like your original submitted version. The drama is more understated, and you feel like it's a scene you might really experience with real people in it.
