I am just a novice. Is the Olympus difficult to learn or operate? The owner of the store served me and he could not reset the camedra to the default settings.

Was it a camera Store? The goof news is the camera is highly customizable, the bad news is the camera is highly customizable.

It is not hard to learn if you are patient and learn how to think like the camera. for guidance there is a great article on preview, http://www.dpreview.com/articles/9115179666/user-guide-getting-the-most-out-of-the-olympus-e-m5

If money is no object wait for the soon to be released E-M1 and the 12-40mm lens. I have several Nikons but love the Olympus for size and the great selection of excellent zoom and prime lenses from Olympus and Panasonic. I would never give up my Nikon's for action sports and low light performance but I go to the Olympus a lot, especially for family stuff, street or just out for the day. Also their are some brilliant portrait lenses a terrific 60mm Macro and the Panasonic 100-300 is a peach. Got some great shots at a night Red Sox game with that lens.

Yes it was a good camera store and that was all they sold. I started with a figure of $700 and I am up to about $1200 now. I am not in a rush but I think I am close to my financial ceiling.

Should be able to get the Oly OM-D E-M5 for that with the 12-50mm weather sealed lens. Nice combo to start and that lens has a very good macro mode. $ 1,099.00 for body and lens.

Take a good look at the Nikon D3200. Optical viewfinder and fits smaller hands very well. And 24MP sensors don't hurt either!

good advice from a guy that knows.... but i have a tad of dissent.... unless you print larger than 8x10 photos, 12 MPs will do just fine..... MPs are overated...it's like horsepower....the biggest engine doesn't always make the fastest car...... don't buy into all of this super dooper MP stuff.... it doesn't make your pics better (it's a marketing ploy to lighten your wallet)............ If you want to make huge wall photos then a lot of MPs are good........ but for most folks 12 to 16 MPs are all you need. There is a lot more to a good camera than MPs..... do your homework....and by the way........ this photo addiction is worse than heroin...get out while you have money in your pocket!!

Forget the J1 J2 and J3. No view finder and I won't buy a camera without a view finder.

I haven't used a view finder since switching to digital in 1998. Only use I personally see in them is in really bright sunlight where the screen is washed out by the sun. I'm so out of the habit of using the viewfinder I don't even use it then, my camera has a setting to boost the screen luminosity. I've heard others say they still use the viewfinder so I reckon it has some value. I like a good lcd screen, and it's something I would look at when buying a new camera, and it *must* be flip out articulating.

I can see that when you are doing video or stills over a crowd.

Also when your are getting down low, or, more often when using a tripod, or anytime the camera is below eye level you can flip out the screen, making it easy to just look down at the screen. I know to young folks, that might not be a big deal, but it is still better to be comfortable than being all bent over trying to get level with the camera.

I am in the market for a good quality DSLR. I am sure this list will grow but currently my two requirements are that the camera have a view finder and that hopefully it is small.

And the winner is.....

I bought a Olympus OM-D E-M5 16MP
Small in size, light, very versitile. Can use Nikon and Panasonic lenses. I probably slightly over bought but this a great camera to get back into the hobby. I expect to receieve it in a few days. Thank yuo for all your suggestions and pointers.

Did you get it with the 12-50 or 14-42? Where did you wind up buying it?

I purchased the Olympus with the 12mm -50mm. I bought it over the net from a store in NJ. I would have preferred to buy it from a local store but I could not find a local store who had the camera and the lense I wanted.

I would mention that I would have preferred a local store for two reasons. I would like to see the local retailers survive and I do prefer to deal face to face. I did not find anyone local who was knowledgeable about this camera. I also saved $100 and the tax by ordering over the net.

Should have tried Hunt's Photo, 8 stores and a number of us own that camera. Enjoy, it's a great camera, was out shooting it today. What lens did you get with it? edit, sorry see you got the 12-50 excellent choice. I have 9 lenses for that camera if you ever want opinions on your next lens, and yes there will be a next lens :-D :-D drop me a line

I am going to spend the first week experimenting with the 12-50 lenses. Then I will start to look at the other lenses I have from other cameras.
What I am particularly pleased with is the camera can take 9 frames per second. Also that it has all these anti- shake features. I will be taking pictures of our two year old grand daughter this weekend and she does not sit still for long.

Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend. I've got six of those grand things running around from 2 to 14
