I am in the market for a good quality DSLR. I am sure this list will grow but currently my two requirements are that the camera have a view finder and that hopefully it is small.

Go to a camera store and try some out.. Maybe a Best Buy or Wal-Mart just to have some in your hand. There are too many to list here without knowing what you intend to use if for

I 2nd going to the camera store and finding the one that fits best. There can be a lot nit picking between brands (although Nikon is best) but you would be hard pressed to find a bad DSLR. Their all great. - Dave

Without knowing the price range here are a couple of guidelines

Hold in your hand the brands you are thinking about buying.
canon and nikon are the most popular, and they work differently. You might be able to navigate one better than the other. With nikon you can fire a flash when it is not on the camera, and won't need a pocket wizard or equivalent to do it. Canon will not do this.

Canon 5d will give you a full frame sensor. all things being equal, the larger the sensor, the better the image quality you will get. a new one runs over $3,000. a used one can be much less.
I shoot canon so Im not sure what Nikon's equivalent is.

with a lens if you can swing the price for one where the aperture (f-stop) does not change when you zoom in and out, you will probably be happier. but you pay for this. generally a more expensive lens will be sharper around the edges. Which doesn't make much difference to most people, I don't think a lot of people really notice it anyway. walmart doesn't sell these, you will probably have to order one. I order all my gear from BnH Photo because of their 30 day no hassle return policy. but there are a lot of places to order from.

Good luck

That is a very open ended question. All I can tell you is I shoot with the Canon 60D and love it.

Take a good look at the Nikon D3200. Optical viewfinder and fits smaller hands very well. And 24MP sensors don't hurt either!

3 questions for you to answer:

1) What is "Good quality"?
2) What is "small"?
3) What do you want to do with this camera?

The easiest part of your new education is joining a great assistance forum! The rest of it is going to be fun! GL

A 50D is not exactly small either. Sounds like the OP would more likely be interested in a Canon Rebel or a Nikon 3200, or other camera in that size range.

I agree the Nikon D3200 is probably the best deal going in today's entry level DSLR's. Another one is considered a "mini" DSLR is Canon's EOS Rebel SL1.
