Hello All,
I am curious if anyone has any experience with the Yongnuo Yn-14EX macro ring flash. I was researching ring flashes for my Canon 100mm macro lens and came upon Yongnou's answer to the Canon MR-14EX. Any thoughts/experiences as always are greatly appreciated.

I am quite familiar with full ring flashes, 3/4-circle flashes, dual (twin) speedlights, etc. I am not aware of the Yongnuo Yn-14EX macro ring flash.

I invite you to view the UHH True Macro-Photography Forum at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html .

Have you considered

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RF-550D-Macro-LED-Ring-Flash-RF550D-For-Nikon-Canon-DSLR-/321029668965?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_CameraFlashUnits_JN&hash=item4abedc0065

I use this and the ease and flexibility are great.

DON'T count it out because of the price, in fact they mace a superb portrait light also

Here is an old shot I took with it

"Chock ice"

I would never waste my money on an LED ring flash, they just don't put out enough light.

I bought a similar unit....It sits in a drawer, unused for that same reason...

Please don't insult people, I know you like it when it is me, I use this on a regular basis and I do not waste money

Perhaps we can see the photographs you took using one when you reached this conclusion

There are numerous on-line user reviews that support this point of view (not enough power) and the images I viewed are pretty soft around the edges--even for a relatively flat object. This leads me to believe that they had to open their aperture sacrificing DOF. One of the values of more power when shooting macro is the ability to shoot manual flash with adjusted output, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8....and stop down to f/16-f/22.
Scott: As a frequent Macro contributor, I realize that you know this....

Not everyone can afford to spend several hundred on a flash that may not even be used that much.

I was given a LED ring flash for a present and experimented with it. The pictures are not perfect but certainly did what I wanted reasonably well. I could get a flash for 20x as much - but would the pictures be 20x better? Would I use it enough to warrant the cost?
The answer to both questions is no!

Hey saying something that someone buys is crap is let's face it impolite. People here buy many things I would not touch but I would never say to their faces they are crap because. A. They bought it and. B others may be considering it. Offer constructive reasons why you would not buy OK but crap is just rude

Just because we don't all want or can afford what others use does not make what we have or use crap

Plenty of links like the ones I attached show how good they are

Also if I were contemplating macro and found I didn't like it. What a reasonable cost way to find out

Supported me. Yes. Thank you. Many many have. I receive PMS almost daily from members and the people are great. I hate no one here pity perhaps. And thank you also

That is sooooooo the reason I got it. I could never ever justify the cost of a flash but these are great FOR THE PRICE. Lovely well lit contrasty perfect dog shots

Wow, certainly didn't mean to open a can of worms here. Just wanted to about the Yongnuo ring flash. Not sure I want to spend the 500 bucks on the Canon and since I have Yongnuo speedlite that works just fine, Definitely would consider their answer to Canon's ring flash for$110 bucks.
