I consider myself as being a Photo Enthusiast; not a Professional. Ive been snapping pictures since being a kid (Kodak Box Brownie, Argus C3, etc.). Got into interchangeable lenses (Canon) about three years ago. I presently use a Canon 60D which I love for its versatility and I will keep it for a backup. Now, in my old age I will be doing mostly travel and landscapes and I am considering a full frame Canon with a zoom lens with emphasis on wide FOV (small mm). I have a Canon EF-S 10mm 22 mm which is great with the 60D but not adaptable to a FF.

I am considering purchasing a refurbished Canon 5D MkII along with a refurbished Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L.
I am not familiar with the other brands (Tamron, etc.) of competitive equivalent lens and would appreciate comments from owners of same. Incidentally, I favor 77mm filter sizes on most of my lens.

I'm shooting with both, the M II & the M III, and I use the 16-35mm/2.8 II. I'm very happy with this lens!

That Canon lens is near the top of my list. I may spring for it even though it requires a larger filter size than 77mm.

For a full frame body, the Canon 17-40mm f/4 L is a great lens for wide area use. Economical and versitile with a plus being an L lens.

CHG_CANON Loc: the Windy City

Hey Webby, I have the EF-S 10-22 and the EF 17-40 lenses. I got the 17-40 for my full frame (but film) EOS 1V. I have both cameras out together a lot and when the reviews talk about the 10-22 being an L quality optics, I have to agree after using the 17-40 on my 7D. The ratings on the 16-35 are higher, but the price is even more. The 17-40 will capture the wide angles of your beach and marina with sky shots.

Yes, the CANON wide-angle L-lens is at the top of my list, especially with the f/4 and 77mm filter size which fits most of my other lenses. - Webby

I have the 16-35, but if you don't need the faster lens for the style of shooting you do, the 17-40 is a perfectly good alternative. Especially if you shoot landscapes and travel with a tripod, the f4 is more than adequate for night or darker scenes.

I have the 5D11, and the canon 24-105L; they are a great combination- a 17-40 L is likewise, and is probably better for what you require than the 16-35 F2.8L, which is a tad more expensive.

and use a 24-105 on a 6D FF for general work ,It's a dilemma.
you don't get the price if you trade or sell old gear so I find a use for them.

Webby, the 5dii with a 17-40mm is a great option.
I am mainly a landscape/seascape photographer.
85% of my shots are taken with this combination and I have 7 other lenses.

I left my Canon 10-22 on my Canon Rebel Xsi when I bought my Canon 6D with the 24-105 L. The 10-22 is a great lens and the Xsi images are good, while landscape doesn't usually require the 6D low light capability - I will likely not be able to see quality differences in landscapes, so why spend more money buying a FF additional lens ??

If you aren't going to be able to see quality differences between a 6D and an Xsi for landscape shots, then I don't suggest any new camera equipment.
I suggest a new set of glasses.
