Hi MaryAnn If you use the pen like you would a normal pen and hold it the same. You can lift the pen and place it on a different part of the screen and the courser will go to that place. You do not have to drag it over the tablet as it will move the courser with out touching the tablet ( I think this is hard to do after using a mouse when it has to be in contact with the mouse mat))nor do you have to mover the courser like you do with a mouse due to the fact that your tablet can be set to be the size of your screen if you have a small one. My wacom cover all my screen so making it very easy to navigate round it. I got a friend to use it and said to her not to use the mouse at all but just the pen. Practice with it and don't give up, I am sure that you will get to grips with it.

I think a lot of you's may be having trouble because you have the software that comes with them set on mouse not pen mode, they operate totally different in each mode, I could never use it in mouse mode I've tried it.

Thank you for the information. I have a Wacom and I kept putting the pen on the tablet and it just wasn't working right. I will begin practicing with it today.

That's ok, Because I found it so easy to use I suppose I do not understand the problem when it is just like using a pen or pencil on a tablet, and not a piece of paper which we have all done many times in our lives. I use mine for every thing and it is very rare I use the mouse. :D

I use a pen and tablet for nearly all of my editing work except for one thing....the straighten tool. For whatever reason the mouse gives me more control. Go figure. I decided to try the pen and tablet when I noticed that a lot of the younger students were using them in my photography classes. I asked a few of them the whys and whats, bought one, and never looked back.

For what it is worth, I do a lot of post processing with all kinds of software tools and I find that the mouse is just fine. I have a large Wacom and pen and only break it out if I have very, very close, detailed graphics to work on in photoshop. But that is rare now because the mouse is so much faster and with a large screen I can see where I am going. Think globally on post processing for best results. BTW the pen does take a good deal of time to get up to speed..and practice makes perfect. So plan to spend some real energy on it and probably pick up one of the training DVDs by Colin Smith. Good luck!

I THINK THAT THERE IS A VERY STRONG CASE FOR THE PEN OVER THE MOUSE, EXCEPT IN THE CASE WHERE ONE LIKE MYSELF WHO HAS PROBLEMS WITH HAND TREMORS. WITH A PEN I SHAKE ALL OVER THE PLACE AND CANNOT BE PRECISE. I FOUND THAT USING THE MOUSE AND INCREASING THE SCREEN SIZE TO 200% TO 300%, I AM ABLE TO BE VERY PRECISE.

I mentioned this before, but if any of you are curious and want to try a tablet—and a really good tablet at that—check out Monoprice. Theirs are cheap compared to Wacom and the capabilities, especially for what you'll do in photo PP are the same. I got a "huge" 6"x10" cordless "dream machine" that I can use to draw and paint with for only $50! This would correspond to over $600 for Wacom! The smaller tablets are even cheaper (you might want to think Christmas presents here, especially for young ones who like to draw). And no I do not get paid by Monoprice. :^)

You would have to pry my pen/tablet combo from my cold, dead hands. On the other hand, if you want my mouse, just pay the postage and it is yours. I have used my Wacom so much, I can't remember when I last used my mouse, not even sure where it is anymore. The key is to practice, then it will be as comfortable as writing, and you won't go back either.

After watching Jerry's post that he needs a new mouse has got me surprised & thinking how many of you guys & gals use what & why. I think there was one that said used a pen.
Anybody that takes photo editing the slightest bit serious would use a pen. If your using Photoshop or any other of the many programs out there a pen is it full stop.
You would never see a professional or even keen editor use a slow cumbersome mouse.
I read here everyday how much people spend on photography equipment & that they are going to persist till they learn why & how to use it.
To me the PP is as important as the camera work & I know most of you would improve your work flow out of site.
Please let me know what you think, I'm guessing I'm in a very small minority.
Cheers !

I have both, and use them both. I do illustrating as well, so the pen comes in useful for that.

For fine detail work, a pen and tablet is far superior to a mouse. For many processing functions, a mouse works just fine. It is the small detail stuff where the pen shines.

It does take a while to get used to it. I'll bet it took me at least 30 seconds. Maybe 25.

I will say that a pen is much faster and if you do a lot of retouching, the guy with a pen will beat the fastest guy with a mouse and when time matters, the pen wins.

You finally convinced me... I have been wavering about this for a few weeks now, and this thread just pushed me over the edge. I just ordered a small Wacom tablet - pen *and* touch - from Amazon for $103 including tax and postage. I do quite a bit of retouching, and at that price it's worth a try, I reckon.
