Mouse or Pen & Tablet

After watching Jerry's post that he needs a new mouse has got me surprised & thinking how many of you guys & gals use what & why. I think there was one that said used a pen.
Anybody that takes photo editing the slightest bit serious would use a pen. If your using Photoshop or any other of the many programs out there a pen is it full stop.
You would never see a professional or even keen editor use a slow cumbersome mouse.
I read here everyday how much people spend on photography equipment & that they are going to persist till they learn why & how to use it.
To me the PP is as important as the camera work & I know most of you would improve your work flow out of site.
Please let me know what you think, I'm guessing I'm in a very small minority.

I do find your post interesting because you are so sure and I am not so sure! I have always used a mouse because it gives me the advantage of a 27 inch screen to work on. I have always imagined this to be better than a 5x7 inch pad. I am prepared to be convinced otherwise if the arguments are good so I look forward to reading replies. Thank you for your post.

Pen and tablet are the sine qua non for photo editing. The precision with which one can draw or follow a line with a pen are impossible (at least for me) using a mouse, no matter how precise. Then, of course, there is the issue of pressure sensitivity...I could not live without my Wacom...

I use both. I use the pen for precise work like masking and blending and more. I use the pen and large Wacom tablet left-handed: the mouse with my right.
An unexpected benefit of my pen is the ability to do puzzles much faster! :)

I use the drawing tablet and pen, I found it impossible to do fine detail with the mouse.

You are still working on the whole 27in screen you are just using the tablet instead of a mouse pad, & I would use a little bigger tablet.

I'm the same pen in left hand, I'm left handed & mouse in the right if I need it.
I totally agree to use the larger of the tablets.

I think it's unfair to say that people who use a mouse instead of a tablet don't take photo editing seriously...I do a LOT of photo editing and I do some in my work and I almost never use a tablet. I have one, but I don't pull it out, for me, it's not necessary...there are ways to follow lines and make accurate selections and strokes with a mouse and I've never found the "pressure sensitivity" feature to be an advantage unless I was sketching.

Why would only serious editing use a pen, I have been editing for 30 years and am happy with a mouse

Not at all...I could care less. I only object to the broad sloppy characterization that "pros" use tablets and "those who aren't serious about post production" use mice.

And you know that, how?
You have of course seen every professional in action at the computer, or at least talked with them and asked what they are using?
I just happen to know several professional photographers and only one of them uses a tablet and pen.
As for myself, after reading a lot about the tablets, I spent the money and got one. I read the instructions that came with it, then started to use it. No good. So I had someone show me. No joy.
It took me less time, a lot less time to get started with PSE. Not like I didn't give the pen a chance: daily practice for at least half an hour, some days much, much more time than that. My grandson is now happy with that tablet and he's not even a photographer!!
Just want to say, that a tablet is not for everybody, a mouse works very well for me, thank you.

I think he is referring to a Wacom tablet, or something similar - not an iPad. The tablet is used in place of a mouse, with the pen doing the selecting on the monitor.

For fine detail work, a pen and tablet is far superior to a mouse. For many processing functions, a mouse works just fine. It is the small detail stuff where the pen shines.
It does take a while to get used to it. I'll bet it took me at least 30 seconds. Maybe 25.
I will say that a pen is much faster and if you do a lot of retouching, the guy with a pen will beat the fastest guy with a mouse and when time matters, the pen wins.
