My Gun

As an experiment , I kept my front door wide open today and placed my AR-15 rifle in the doorway , with three 10 round clips of .223 Cal ammo on the floor next to it.

Then I left it alone and went about my business .

During the day , the UPS man dropped off a package,
the mailman delivered the mail , my neighbors teenage son came to mow the lawn, several people passed by walking their dogs and quite a few cars stopped at the traffic light near the front of my house .

Every so often , I checked on the gun to see if it had been up to something .
But each time I looked, it was still just standing there , right where I left it . It had never moved even one inch .

In fact, it hadn't even loaded itself , much less killed someone , despite the numerous opportunities it had to do so.

Well , you can imagine my surprise ...with all the Media hype about how dangerous these so-called "Assault rifles " are and how they go around killing people .

Now either the News media is lying , or I'm in possession of the dumbest , laziest gun in the world.

Well, now I'm off to check what the spoons in my drawer are doing . I hear they're making people fat and that obesity kills millions of times more people every year than assault rifles.

PS: do any of you ever check to see if your car is drunk before letting it out of the garage ?

I agree, kind of like trying to blame obscene phone calls on the dirty old phone--good one

Well this has spurred me to open the gun safe and air it out.
In my youth I began collecting old military rifles. I could not afford Weatherby, Drillings of fine Italian shotguns.

Now that you mention the lack luster ambition of others I can plainly see my weapons have not moved for years ( aside for the occasional cleaning and inspection.) And there is no doubt they have not been sneaking out for nefarious rondevous.

The old Mausers and Arisakas rest comfortably with the Marlin Levers and a few Remingtons and Rugers. A pair of antique side by each stage coach scatter guns sit in the corner, ignored by the legitimate long guns

Actually it is a serene scene all calm an quiet. ready to be called in to service should the need arise, but content to wait quietly.

Save for an erent Craftsman Lawnmower that loves to decapitate field mice. not much of anything in my home does any harm to living things.

Knives resigned to KP Duty, cutting nothing but chicken and veggies.
A wonderful collection of mechanics tools from my long past drag race days, so many lethal possibilities and yet none have do any more damage than a skinned knuckle.

Perhaps it is the human element that should be the focus of concern when a life is taken.

BUT who will inform the ignorant that inanimate objects are benign save for the will of those that would use them for destruction.

I wonder, would the same people cry out for HAMMER CONTROL when they are used to kill? Masonary? Who knows how many lives are destroyed by bricks.

A Drunk driver kills, not the Subaru

This type of reasoning is absurd. Of course it is people who kill other people. No one in their right mind would dispute that. And a large number of murderers use guns as their weapon of choice to commit these murders. A Gun is a tool that is designed for a specific purpose.
It is the availability of these weapons in society. Do you keep strychnine injected candy in your cupboard? They never kill people. It's just your grandchildrens fault if they come over and raid the kitchen cupboard. It's not the poison candy's fault. Poisoned candy has never killed anyone.

Absurd way of thinking?... If you can guarantee that the crooks will not use a gun when committing there crimes I will consider that I do not need one.

I understand the need to defend yourself if you are threatened. However this thread was started by using a cliqued argument that guns don't kill people, people do. This is also true if you take it as a simple stand alone statement, but it is also deliberately misleading. Q. Why did mankind invent firearms? A. Mankind invented firearms because mankind has a long history of engaging in warfare and firearms gave armed forces who possessed them, a distinct advantage over those who did not.
Mankind has the ability to design and construct tools and machines of far greater complexity than any other creature on the planet, and we do. Firearms are designed to be used to kill.
You can take your firearm to the local gun club for target practise, but Psychopaths take their weapons to the local school, shopping mall, cinema etc. to perform a concert recital.

Unless you have been living on the moon ( or Australia lol )you will have to agree that the highest crime rates in the US , including robbery, rapes and murders are in the inner cities (Chicago, NY etc ....)

In other words, in areas where the strictest gun control laws
IN THE WORLD have been in effect for decades .

What makes you think that by taking a shotgun or rifle away from a farmer in Iowa is going to solve the problem ?

And as you said : " no one in their right mind would dispute that it is people who kill other people "
so perhaps it's time to look for other solutions ?

I guess you are not stupid enough to actually do that, and are just making a (good) point?

EXACTLY ... and that is why the 2nd amendment was written, so the free citizens can defend against a tyrannical government.
