I went UNDER it with a 37' Lord Nelson Victory Tug going from Portsmouth, NH to Boca Chica, Fl just a few miles north of Key West. Piloting it at 10 knots speed took 23 days.

Ships in the harbor were fantastic.

The Mackinac Bridge authorities will supply a driver for you.
The worst part is the section that is not paved, just a see-thru grating.
A few years a go a little car ( a hugo) got blown off by the cross winds.

It's been over 30 years ago (don't know the current condition) but in west New Orleans in Metaire La. the Huey P. Long bridge over the Mississippi is a terrifying experience the first time. The road way of two 'narrow' lanes on either side of the looong railway bridge (to give clearance to shipping on the mississippi river level change +-40' seasonally).
Each lane is narrow and with an 18 wheeler beside you is TENSE. BUT THEN THE 'JOG' IN THE ROAD. Yes the surveyors missed the points from either side. Suddenly the lanes change about 18" due to the miss. That will get your attention! Then at either end there are 'Traffic Circles' or 'round abouts' that will confuse first timers and maybe second timers. Better have your insurance card and 'soil' absorbng material handy. And the way the Cajuns drive promoted the Bumper Sticker "I survived Highway 90!"

Here's a couple rides across the bridge......I guess if you have a fear of heights (the bridges across the ship's channels) and claustrophobia (fear of going under the ship's channels by tunnel) you may experience problems negotiating the 17 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel highway....been across it and have fished at the fishing pier at the first tunnel island from the Virginia side many times.....

Make these drives and see why folks find it scary......

In a couple of M/C Trips in that direction, I have gone across the Mackinac bridge twice in what could be considered moderate winds... Breezy, but not too bad...

BUT one of our group was afraid of heights (We didn't know that) and when we got to the "Open" section .. He froze... Parked his bike and we had to run a relay to get him, his wife and his bike down to DRY land..LOL..

Beautiful country and a "fun" bridge to ride if not afraid of heights.

Mike
