Good grief. Every year this short and raucous period brings with it a fleeting permission to dream of new goodies...and to actually reach out and grab one. Or two.
Dilemma, dilemma, what should we chose?
Perhaps someone out there could help spur my unfettered greed...or perhaps even better, save me from it?
This Christmas story all began with "I HATE DIRT". But love to play in it. Meaning I also hate to change lenses. My Nikon D90 has not had its lens mount worn out in the past 3 years. Beginning with an 18-55, moving up to 18-105 and, for a short time, to 18-135. But now, there is woe and consternation over the temptation of this shiny tall stranger lurking on catalogue shelves: An 18-270!
Sheesh. Why do they have to come up with such ruthless threats to a holiday budget?
Distant mouse on the wall or spider in the mistletoe...beware the 270 that will bring you to bay. Or to disk. Chip. Whatever...
But can you imagine the wails of woe and the wreckage of hopes that would follow if that gleaming peak of civilized technulogy were to...fall short of it's promise...and leave in it's wake both the loss of infinite possibilities and the crushed crumbs of a budget?
Perhaps some carolers out there, escapees from preparations for the holiday, would have first hand knowledge of taming a Tamron or Nikkor colored 18-270 beast>? Is it sharp? Is it strong? Is it quick? Can it catch the mouse?
And may you too struggle through many happy choices this season...

Go have a psychic reading. LOL, I'm sure all your questions will be answered plus questions that you didn't even know that you had. Ain't life grand?
If you hate to change lenses skip the Nikkor and Tamron and go treat yourself to one of those new fangled point and shoot cameras with long zoom lense. I love mine at 26x and I hear they have them now up to 30x all optical.
But no reason to be tempted by the hustle and bustle of tis the season...wait til it goes on sale.
yes, I am already cutting the budget that was already cut for gifts to the peeps this year so that i can buy for myself some technology that i am completely convinced that i need before the end of the year, how does that sound? making a Christmas for myself? darn tootin

Just to repeat part of the plea:
" Perhaps some carolers out there...would have first hand knowledge of taming a Tamron or Nikkor 18-270 beast>? Is it sharp? Is it strong? Is it quick? Can it catch the mouse?"
If the lens is fit and robust, but sharp at the ends of it's reach, then lens changes could cease. Ending also most of the dust, pollen and debris that inevitably invades and stakes a claim on delicate sensor turf!
There's a chance it would need to serve where the impact of dirt and humidity could mean survival for only a matter of hours...at best. And where cleaning the sensor would be kin to doing so while riding a manure spreader on it's rounds of a soggy field.
If anyone has personally beaten up an 18-270 with serious heat/cold, dirt, humidity, and rough handling then some of your insight on it's tolerance would be very helpful and much appreciated.

There must be a hundred ways or more of celebrating the season. Just picking a couple or so can't be greedy at all... So enjoy several. Especially the ones that are free...

Since local camera stores don't exist in most towns any more, there's less hustle, bustle or Sales. More maddening little bells, politicians and pollsters though.
So just send out a web search that comes back and says "Oh Yes, We Have It For Less...whatever it is..!" But by then, they are out of the stock that put the stores that had stock out of business to begin with.
Could the elves have been unionized too...?
Still is a wonderful season in spite of itself.
