Try going to Amazon, looking up your battery (choose a non-original, or aftermarket), and reading customer reviews. You should find your answers there.

I have a D5100, and for me, battery life has NOT been an issue. Hundreds of photos per charge, just about what I get from my D800e. I usually poop out before the battery does.
thank you both for those comments have looked into Amazon, it seems Nikon batteries are to be found at 30% off the RRP and Generic ones half of that, but there are still odd times these wont be recognised by D5100,in fairness lots have bought them without a problem!

Allegedly the Nikon batteries have a chip in them so if that is true you need after-market ones with chips. I purchased 2 Clearmax batteries that say for Nikon EN-EL14 and they work without any problem. Not sure of the battery life as I haven't had my D5100 that long yet. The 2 batteries were cheaper than one Nikon battery.
what a dilemma then, so generic ones could or could not have this chip, I would hate to end up with one tat wouldn't work at all, as that's money down the drain, another sleepless night methinks ! Graham
I have the D5100 and I find the battery life exceptional. I shoot raw and fine. I also get several hundred photos per charge. That also includes browsing through the photos in the camera. I did purchase an after market battery. While I was able to use it, it definitely did not hold a charge as well as the one that came in the camera. I then bought a Nikon one from Amazon or B&H, not sure which. It also works well. The only complaint about the Nikon batteries, is that once they start showing a lower charge, they go down very quickly. So, I try to change as soon as it drops by one bar.
I have purchased aftermarket batteries for both the Nikon D7000 and the Canon 6D. Neither one would work at all in those bodies. I have since stuck with manufacturer only batteries and have never had a failure or even a hint of a problem.
Graham,
I picked up 2 extra Nikon batteries from Amazon for $19.95 each. They should work fine. Especially if you purchase a battery grip. That way you can have two batteries running the camera twice as long.
But, SsSSshh! Don't tell a soul. But the battery grip looks AWESOME too! Get a Neweer or Mieke brand grip as they're less expensive. :)
I also have the multi-battery grip from Zeikos that works and looks great...Amazon $39. I like the feel it gives this lightweight camera.
I have purchased two after market batteries from the same manufacturer for a Nikon D800e. One pooped out after the first charge, the other is still kicking around.
Did not have battery issue with any Nikons so far. I have a tendency to drain my batteries before recharging them hence my need for spare(s).

CAUTION!!!
That is NOT an original Nikon product, it is a Chinese knock-off! The listing even says its a "third party" manufactured product in the listing. Prepare to be disappointed if you spend your money on these counterfeits.

I received an original Nikon battery, not a knockoff!

Sorry, but its a knock-off, they even copy the box. Does it have the Nikon Hologram on it? No? Its a knock off.
All you have to do is read the listing and they even tell you that.
