In the first place,,,this discussion is never going to end up with any change of minds or attitudes.... if you have read all so far, it is just a big circle.

I have 3 Great Grand Sons who come to my house at 5:30am every week day morning...supposedly lay down on the places I have prepared for them and sleep until their Grandmother wakes them, up and prepares them for school.

One is pretty quiet and obedient, lays down, pulls the cover up and sleeps for another 2 hours. The second one is a bit different... Takes him a while to settle down, but when he does he generally gets about 1.5 hours of sleep.
The Third is somewhat akin to the "Tasmanian Devil" of cartoon Fame......Total Chaos, Total NOISE, Total run through house attempting to run up walls and across the ceiling.... NOW since I do not have permission to whip the little devil... I speak to him, quietly and with authority (at least that's the plan) Little devil quiets down for exactly 32 seconds and then makes a round through the house again... After this performance, I get up, grab the little devil by the scruff of his neck, place him down in a chair next to mine and warn him of death and destruction if I have to speak to him once more.... That generally keeps him in chair for 64 seconds.... SIGH....

NOW, I am fully convinced that if I was able to blister his hind end I could probably extend his quiet times to 128 seconds.... He does not have achd pdrq or what ever that crap is that they are supposed to have..he has been tested... He is just a very active, total ignoring person who MAY grow up to be a serial killer or maybe a politician...

We didn't have plastic fly swatters when I was a kid. The swatter part was about 4" x 4" and was made of a mesh material similar to the screen on the screen door. Hurt like the dickens. When that wore out, Mom and Dad went for a hickory switch. Didn't feel any better.

If you spare the rod will it spoil or "hurt" the child. I am using the quotation marks loosely.
I remember as a young boy my mother reprimanding me with a plastic fly swatter. In it's many uses bringing me around to her point of view the paddle part fell off and all that was left was a hollow tube. I can still hear it whistling throught he air. It did not leave any marks but quickly changed my behaviour rather quickly.
I turned out ok and I hope you all did too.
Any feed back???

So, I know it's a bit of a stretch, but bear with me.

By using corporal punishment as the "preferred" means of correcting behavior (like we used to do with children and continue to do with adults...via prisions) would YOU, today, want to be spanked it you "misbehaved?

I think not.

Yes, we did survive, and yes, some children today are coddled too much?

However, there are other ways of teaching children what's right & wrong and how to behave appropriately.
We're all just too busy to invest the time so let's spank 'em and get it over with.

Some respond to spanking and are not "hurt".

Some do not/will not respond to spanking and will be "hurt".

You're an adult, you decide which is appropriate.
