To keep track of you lens cap:

I drilled a small hole through the lens cap an knotted a string threaded through the hole. Tie the other end to the camera carrying strap.

You guys are awesome. I love home brewed stuff! I have a ReallyRightStuff tripod designed for ground level use. It is well built with a comparable price tag. The legs are about 10" with rubber bumpers on the back so when opened the bumpers are stabilizing it on the ground. The height above the ground is dependent on the ball head attached.

The coolest home brew I saw was made by Andrew Davidhazy where he made a platform that rotated and at the same time it wound the film rewind knob allowing a full 360 degree photo.

....which is convenient if you use only one lens or if all your lenses have the same filter diameter.
For lens cap security with lenses of different sizes use Velcro. Stick a piece of the soft "loop" Velcro on the front of each lens cap, and stick or sew a patch of the "hook" velcro to the lapel or sleeve of your shirt, jacket, vest...whatever....ot to your camera strap or tripod leg as a docking site to hold the cap securely until putting it back on the lens. Or...put the "Velcro" on the end of a cord attached to your camera...just be sure the cord is long enough to reach the cap on your longest lens!

This could turn out to be a great topic:
Here is a lightweight -cheap and easy extra hand I use for external flash. $5 ballhead on a $2 clamp from Home Depot....(ok for a point & shoot, But I made another from a steel clamp for my camera).

Here's a pic that illustrates the problem. My Manfrotto has a reversible center column that gets the camera down to ground level, but then all the controls are reversed and hard to use. My thought is a gimble type thing that would hang from the center column and allow the ball head to be mounted right side up. :)

Would also like to see a tripod mounted beer can holder. ;)

Never saw or heard of a set-up like that, but then never knew to look. Question: Have I read on here about software that allows you to connect the camera to an iPad via USB port and use to view shot and control the shutter? If so, could it be convenient to have an iPad adapter to mount on the top of the tripod?

I made a small reflector out of a cardboard circle and aluminum foil. I also always carry a white umbrella as a diffuser and a frisbee to splash water on dry rocks. None of these were my ideas, but they work great.

Search for How to make a ground pod in You Tube and you should come up with a couple of sites. Jerryj98501

May I suggest you buy some extra of the loop tape, cut it the same size as the hook patches, and cover those hook patches with it when not in use for your camera gear?
The hook patches have the nasty ability to grab anything that comes within a foot's distance of it: $300 alpaca sweater, wife or girlfriend's brandnew hose, etc. Carefully trying to remove from those items, or just yanking them off, will leave you with damaged goods and a not so happy female.....

I recently bought a new pistol grip ball head which has a screw that tightens the quick release plate stopping movement/shake - it worked so well I took my other QR plates to the shop where I drilled and tapped for the use of small thumb screws which eliminated movement/shake in them also. $6 for the proper size tap and thumb screws.

Being a retired toolmaker ive decided im going to tinker in the workshop .
What I am planning on making is a base plate to mount an extra ballhead Ihave onto. This plate is intended to be used for ground level shots - I know some will say just use a bean bag but i think the ball head will give me more flexibility. Should be much easier to use than a widley spread out tripod.

Has anyone else made something like this or know of a product out there similar ?? If there is such a product out there it may act as a guide for my creation. It may take some experimentation as to size and weight.

Now that Ive spewed out this question I wonder about others inventions/homemade gear ??? Ive seen lots of different homemade flash diffusers but there must be more things ??

I made a "duo-pod" used for photographing birds on the ground or in a tree. It's light weight and easy to carry. I may patent it being I can't find one like it. My son is a patent attorney.

I mounted a small ball head inside an 8" aluminum skillet for just such a purpose, easy to handle and keeps the head dry in case the ground is damp. Skillet cost nothing as it was an old one I was going to throw out with peeling Teflon coating and the 3/8" bolt was in the spare parts bin. I did have to use a dab of silicone on the hole to make sure it sealed against the moisture though.

MT,

Please post a picture of your invention.

Many tripods allow reversing the center column for ground level shots.

This type of lens cap with a very fine tether is available in all lens size so you can have one on each lens - I have a rubber band attached to the tether end that goes around the lens body where it will not interfere with the lens function they also sell the tether with a small tape patch that can be "stuck" on any lens cap.
These are on Amazon.

Here are a couple of things I put together. I found a used Sigma 70-210 2.8 APO for a really good price but there was no tripod collar. I made the one shown here which works very well and folds up to take up less space. I also had a small level in the garage (I have no idea where it came from) but by cutting 3 pieces from trashed CD I was able to mount it in the flash shoe which I can use to make sure that the lens is level.
