I actually posted this image several months ago when I was in Africa. Due to the limitations of the internet I had to drastically reduce the image in size.
This is a mosaic of two frames, each frame consists of 10 stacked exposures each one having an exposure time of 120 seconds. They were shot at f/5.6, with a Canon 60Da using a 70 - 300mm lens at 70mm. The stacking process was done using DeepSkyStacker which is a free program. The mosaic was created from the 10 stacked exposures of the eta Carinae nebula with the 10 stacked exposures of the Southern Cross using Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0
The large dark region is known as the Coal Sack nebula. Just above it lies the rich galactic cluster known as the Jewel Box. Over to the right hand side lies the eta Carinae nebula, a reddish glowing cloud of hydrogen gas. Several other gas clouds can be seen in the center of the image and numerous clusters are found throughout the photo.
