My thoughts about pictures and one example

No, of course the river is not tilted except for it's natural flow; what seems to be the concern of some is the appearance it being so because of the position of the camera. For some appearance is reality and for some, not so much. Several editing programs have some pretty nifty options for adjusting for this phenomenon. Photoshop for example has a " correct camera distoration" under their filters that I find very very useful - now if one should avail themselves of such everytime is the debate: or maybe just a personal choice.

It needed a little tweaking, the colors are gorgeous. my pick is the presentation, I would like to see this more in a wider landscape format, this 8x10 is tight. IMO...

Upon further examination, AvenDano and NNB are correct, I think it's more (lens) distortion then camera tilt. Plus I was sitting crooked when I looked at it.

The important thing is that all my picking at nits should not detract from the quality of the image. I hereby withdraw all statements of crookedness, tiltage, or off-balance-icity. :)

A coulpe have mentioned to straighten the picture; my question is would they make it straight by the river or by the bank. If one stands so they are not at a 90 degree to the opposite bank of a river does it not asppear to be slanted and in fact don't rivers flow? I undrestand what is being said just not always so sure to what extent one should always make thing s "right". Now the weird little thing I noticed is the little orange shaded mark in the pictures lower left corner - guessing maybe the top of a post or a sign. Very nice picture and what I like best is the sky - clouds and blue adds to any picture.

Henry, that is a nice shot. It's a little tilted down from left to right, but the mix of colors is nice, it conveys a peaceful scene, and nothing in the frame looks as if it should not be there.

I'm enjoying the feeling of the shot as well as its technical "correctness" but don't see the "tilt". Help, please. What am I missing? Most of the trees look fully vertical to me so what else should I be looking at to see tilt?

Ok, strike this comment. I've just read all the follow-up comments and sit corrected.....

perhaps you looking at corrected version..lol..put a ruler cross the river bank(on pic at top of page)..it tilts from left to right..Jim H corrected it a while back. The original is off putting to me..but its a personal preference..if you like crooked pics then by all means..keep it that way. Its a lovely scene either way!

Ok, but what about the trees?? I straightened it in iPhoto and the ruler's straight horizontally when I hold it up to my computer screen but then the trees go wonky. That gives me vertigo! Maybe I just don't expect a river bank to be straight like a horizon on the ocean.

Do you want the river bank level or the river level folks - I belive they are just about always are two differnt things. Because of water flow they are just about always even if account for rapids, waterfalls, and movement towards { okay mountain streams too} a ocean. On the other hand the adjacient land is almost never over any distance or there would not be any rivers only runoff once the ground was completly soaked.

Sure, then the trees aren't straight nor the hillside or road or whatever that is behind the river. If we try to get everything straight it's a no-win because for me it loses the feel of the photo. For my tastes a river bank does not need to be straight anyway. But then, my right leg is shorter than my left....

I think it looks great. Trees are hardly ever straight up and down, at least around here. They tend to lean a little with the prevailing wind.

With all due respect to your opinion, I don't think the picture is tilted down from left to right. If you notice, most of the trees are straight up. If the picture is tilted down these trees will be leaning towards the right. The position of the camera is NOT perpendicular to the upper edge of the lake but rather at an angle which gives the impression that the picture is tilted.

Anyway, beautiful shot! Looking at the picture, I feel like I am there in person. Thanks for sharing.

It is a beautiful shot. But I guess the straightness is debatable. I see most of the trees as slightly tilted to the right. It is subtle but lends a feeling of not being level to me. To me the redone 'straightened' photo does have the trees straight. Regardless it is a great shot.
