I read somewhere about a technique, I believe it's in Photoshop, whereby combining several shots from a tripod you can remove the people within the scene. Does anyone know the procedure for this?

I know what you're talking about but that technique requires the people to be moving as in a street scene where they are walking by. You layer the three or more photos in photoshop and then mask out the person which reveals the photo under it where that person wasn't there. The completed top layer becomes a composite of all the images under it and thus the people all get removed. I'm not sure if that's clear or not, but you shold be able to find a tutorial on the web.

There's actually a script from within Photoshop (I believe from CS3 and up) that removes non-static images. Let's say you're on a bridge looking down on the cross-traffic. But you want just a shot of the highway. It's called the Median filter.

From http://photo.tutsplus.com/tutorials/post-processing/how-to-effortlessly-remove-people-from-photos/

Here’s the main process of running the script within Photoshop:
Shoot lots of images to ensure you have area of the background without an obstruction
The first script is “Load Files into Stack”
It then runs the “Median” filter that will calculate and remove the intrusive objects
Nothing static is touched – only moving objects (so it’s only suitable for shooting a static scene)
A few tips for cleaning up the image are then covered
The technique is also excellent for removing image noise. You need Photoshop CS3 Extended or higher for this.

Thanks, I'll look for it. I have CS4, which is a rather dramatic change from CS3, but then with CS5 they seem to have gone back and upgraded CS3, so who knows.

I'm using CS4 and it seems Adobe took out a lot of the good things from CS3, then put them back and better in CS5. CS4 is really different, but I don't think it was popular with users, hence CS5. All the things I really want aren't in CS4....

I had 3 and 4. Didn't notice that either. Still seemed to be able to do what I wanted. Perhaps some things just weren't what I was using?

You are refering to panorama in PS where the button saying remove ghosts eliminates moving objects from all but one of the units. If you want to remove a person from a photo, use "content aware fill". A good reference for Photo Shop CS 5 is "Photo Shop CS5 The Missing Manual
