Thanks, Bill.

As you see above another one did the job. But it is good to know there are other options. Sometimes the free ones don't stay free.

Larry, try RECUVA

It is a free program that I have used to recover photos from several of my friends' cards.

Luckily, I have not had to do this for my own.

Isn't this an example of a thread being hijacked? I was trying to find out how to clear the images from my SD disk, and now we're talking about recovering pictures and buying each other beers?

I beg to differ. I have formatted my SDHC 16GB card on my computer when I used it to store files temporarily. When I was done I simply reformatted with my Nikon D80 and all is well. I have done this multiple times.

I have a 2gb SD card right now that I formatted on the computer and now it won't work on the computer or the camera.

Have you tried reformatting in the camera. If it still bonks out, then it's a trash can item. Sorry!!

(If by 'won't work..the camera', you meant it won't reformat in the camera, then you've done all you can.)

All information on memory cards for cameras specify to never format on the computer, and don't delete files on the card with the computer.

I have also read that deleting pics in camera, can corrupt the file system on the card

Any time you change data on the memory card, there is a statistical possibility that something can go wrong and corrupt the data on the card. You must delete files eventually and the greatest probability of success is to do it from the camera. If it becomes damaged, then 'dem are da breaks', you gave it your 'best shot'.

perhaps I should clarify, deleting all pics is one thing, I've heard it's not good to delete individual pics. such as an out of focus shot while you are out shooting.
I personally never delete, I shoot, I upload to my PC, then I format the card in camera.

Hi,

I probably don't have enough experience to be a good source but I have never had a problem deleting single pics. I have done it thousands of times.

Scot Kelby, author of many photo books and long time professional, strongly suggests deleting as you go.

Most recommendations I have seen suggest formatting the card rather than deleting after you have saved two copies through upload. As I recently demonstrated to myself, that does not delete the pictures any more than "deleting" them does. Barring mechanical damage to the card they are there and recoverable until written over.

In over ten years I have never had a failure due to deleting single files on the memory card. I OFTEN delete individual files when I outrun my flash's ability to recharge before the next shot, when I would be embarassed for someone to see how bad a shot looks, when I hold the button down too long and get multiples, etc.

Hi,

Does anyone know how to recover images from a reformatted card?

I made a mistake and thought I had uploaded all the images to my computer and so went ahead and reformatted. It turns out I had missed a day. There are a few images I wouldn't mind getting back if possible.

Otherwise a case of live and learn.

Regards,

I use Zero Assumption recovery (http://www.z-a-recovery.com/download.htm) however I am not sure it will work if the card has been formated.

Thanks for posting that, Birdman. It came out a little strange as if I posted it. You get the credit both for this posting and for sending it to me. Also is was you that noted you didn't know if it would work with a formatted card.

Anyhow I took his advice and used it on my formatted card and it worked like a charm. I got everything back. (I had only taken a couple of pictures since formatting so didn't overwrite what was there.) Actually I got back many more pictures than just the last formatting and then deleted them.

It was very easy, also.

Larry Leach

Hi, Mickey

If you ever get to Boise I'd love to buy you a beer!

(Alas, if you come after Jan 1 and like to smoke it won't be in a Boise bar).

Anyhow, Zar worked like a charm and ALL the photo's I wanted to recover are safely stored away.

Examples below.

Larry Leach

It looks to me that those pictures would have been worth the $39.95 as a last resort. Good shots! Would have liked to seen the rest of them.
