SD Card Question

I took the SD card from my Minolta and put all of the photos in the trash. It clearly said there were no pictures on the card. However, when I put the card in my Wii console, I was able to view over 400 photos. How is that possible? When I look at th contents of the card on my computer, everything indicates that it's blank. If I take the card out of the Wii, then it shows there's nothing there. I'm lost, can anyone help?

do you want the photos? i assume not. if that is the case DO NOT under any circumstances EVER NEVER format on the computer or you can throw the SD card in the trash - i learned the hard way. instead put it in the camera and format it on the camera. that should clean it up. every time i shoot i upload to my pc and then format the SD card on my camera. never have any issues.

When you move stuff to trash it's still on the card but invisible. To delete you have to empty the trash w. card in the reader.

As an explanation so you will understand the situation....

When you 'delete' from the computer, it only removes information that tells the computer where to find the picture on the card. It does not erase the picture files themselves. The computer checks the file data area and finds nothing since that data is gone. The WII just looks for picture files on the card. It finds them (since these are not erased by deleting) and then plays them. Reformating the card will delete the picture files themselves. As cautioned earlier, don't format while on the computer. That format structure can and is often different than the format that the camera can use. If you do this and the camera can't read or use the card, then format on the camera and restore the card for use. (some cameras can't reformat a computer formatted card so the card becomes and additional memory card for the computer only)

Put the card in the camera. Go to the review menu and select delete. Then, select, delete all. This will erase the photos on the card.

Or, just format the card in the camera. That will remove all files.

There are directories on the card that are necessary for your camera. Formatting in camera puts them on the card. If you erase. or, format the card in the computer, you have to format in the camera to make it ready for the camera to use.

BTW, you can, also, put more directories on the card, or, copy pix and other files from the computer to the card.

I do a lot of things with my camera, computer, and files that are not in the book.

Hi,

Does anyone know how to recover images from a reformatted card?

I made a mistake and thought I had uploaded all the images to my computer and so went ahead and reformatted. It turns out I had missed a day. There are a few images I wouldn't mind getting back if possible.

Otherwise a case of live and learn.

Regards,
Larry Leach

Try using a file recovery program. On a computer, deleting a file only alters the file header, so, you can recover a deleted file. To get rid of a file you need to shred it, or, format the drive.

However, if you formatted the card, you are probably out of luck.

Could the flash card SD by HD or the new card and other readers don't recognize it?

Hi,

Yes, I was pretty sure the data is likely still there other than what I wrote over before I figured out the goof. I believe just like deletions reformatting only affects the card directory and does not wipe the card. I'd expect some of the pics to be distorted but some to be recovrable.

I am looking for specific recommendations on free ones. I see SanDisk refers you to one for $39. These pics aren't worth that to me and I don't intend to do this again.

Thanks! I'll give it a whirl.

I downloaded a trial version of Disk Doctors Photo Recovery. It just finished its job...took about an hour. It is a 16 GB card. It recoverd over 300 files and most of them are OK...including it appears the ones I wanted. A few show up as "corrupted"...but not many. Some of them have survived multiple reformats.

Alas the free download puts a watermark on what it shows you and doesn't let you save them. They too want $39.

But now I know that they are there I'll work a bit harder at it and use another card whilst fussing with it.

Regards,
Larry

Larry, try RECUVA

It is a free program that I have used to recover photos from several of my friends' cards.

Luckily, I have not had to do this for my own.

Hi, Mickey

If you ever get to Boise I'd love to buy you a beer!

(Alas, if you come after Jan 1 and like to smoke it won't be in a Boise bar).

Anyhow, Zar worked like a charm and ALL the photo's I wanted to recover are safely stored away.

Examples below.

Regards,
Larry Leach

I'm glad it worked for you.

I can see why you wanted to recover those, great shots, especially the second one.
