This is the best I can do - fake smoke effects. It was a challenge remembering which program might come close to "abstract smoke"
Smokin' red shoes
Smokin' moon
These belly dancers were really "smokin'"
Good Morning, RR! Great start and I'm excited to have a challenge that I've never tried before. I'm babysitting Grandbabies, so no playing with smoke today. I've also got to find some long matches as well. I hope to work on it tomorrow! Your examples look great, as usual ;)
Oh My! This will be hard for! I have kids, don't wanna catch house on fire! LOL! I will give it a go!

Hi Folks,
Well the Challenge shall be a bit different and it is called Abstract Smoke, but that is not the difference, the difference is that I know absolutely nothing about it which means that we can all work together and learn something. According to the person who made up the site the hardest part is setting up, and he did not lie. My biggest problem is the angle of lighting and also the density of light.
I have been working on it a few times now for two days and have made some small progress and my State of Grace did some hard times too.

This topic was discussed many times. Check this link
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/search.jsp?q=smoke&u=&s=0. I was playing with smoke 2 days ago. I show my result. Your mistake is wrong light. I took my picture in dark room using flash. I found this scheme very good. Flash is isolated from background by 3 books. Sheet of white paper used as a reflector. Good luck.
MMC very nicely done thanks for the info very informative

You are off to a good start Roadrunner. MMC has a very simple and effective setup.
Here is another link for this subject,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2d281_HoEQI used two Vivitar 283 flash units set to half power and remote triggers. ISO was 400, 1/160 sec. and f11 or f8 all manual settings. The lens was a 35mm f1.8 on a D300. Colored filters were used for the different colors. I flipped the last one just to see something different.
jimber great examples I really enjoyed all the colors the purple is mighty cool

Try the incense sticks instead of matches.

Wow what a challenging challenge. I have just taken a few sample photo's which turned out terrible, the only thing I could find was one of my husbands cigarettes, I am not sure what the best thing to use would be...A cigarette, a candle, I don't have any insence in the house but that would probably be good as well. Any suggestions?

My goodness, this will be a challenge. It looks like some of the other posts have done this before with great success. I like you, Roadrunner, gonna have to go through the learning process. Today I'm waiting for my new camera and remote release to be delivereed. Can't wait to try learning both the camera and this chalenge.
Thanks for hosting and challenging Jim.
Well I played it safe and went out to the fire pit and tried to get some shots, If it is still bringing or smoldering tonight after dark I may go out again. These didn't come out great, but I gave it a go!
Flame and smoke. These were hard to get in focus! I think it will be easier in the dark...
This is my favorite from this morning.
I thought this looked cool too.

OK here is my first attempt. I was just looking at some youtube videos about this and a lot of people are using flash guns with a light to the left on a black background. The only black background I has is a felt cloth, I had a light on the left for the smoke affect and went down and bought some incenses. I am finding that the light is casting to much light on the cloth and looks terrible. Any suggestions?

A few more attempts
don't think this counts but was taken last winter on a foggy night, breath blown in the fog created this image
I am finding this light is way to bright and the smoke wants to go towards it and the glare from the light makes the black background look purple
This was my last attempt, a little better but still not right
Plans changed and I ended up without babies today, so I looked around at what I could use without danger of burning the house down ;) So, I ended up with baby abstract smoke patterns/trails. I plan to buy some incense and try again before the challenge ends.
I had a 3 wick candle that I lit - I really don't have a dark room in the house, except the closets, and I'm not brave enough to light a candle in them! Lol!
Tried it by blowing out one of the wicks and trying to jump into position
An interesting smoke pattern ~ the house now smells very nice !
