Picking contest entries -- critique wanted
The second one is my choice because of the linear lines and the great reflections. I am an artist also so I always look for lights and darks similar to the difference in light at the top of the photo and the bottom in the reflection.
Definitely foggy morning. 1st photo just has too much going on ... the eye doesn't know where to look and all the lines take the eye out of the picture.
My first thought as I saw the first photo was "what is the story here?" It is just too much to take in all at once. The second is simpler, but boring. The third grabbed me. I like it a lot. It captures the imagination. If I were judging this contest, I would chose it over the other two. Good work.
A lot of contests won't accept the first one beacuse it has an identifiable registration numner unless you have a property release from the boat's owner. In my opinion, #2 would be ok if cropped tighter. #3 would be good to go, I think, if the image was a tad darker to make the boat sand out a bit more. Just my thoughts. Good luck with the contest.
#3 may be cliche, but it is my favorite - a plain ol outboard in the middle of nowhere.
Thanks to all who provided feedback and opinions. They're all helpful. Now here are three more for the contest. And for those who asked, it is a contest put on by a local camera club (but one that attracts about 500 entries annually), and there are several themes, including Nature and General.
Keep the comments coming and let me know what you think of these. (And please tell me -- should I open a new thread for the next batch?
Photo 1 -- Robin bathing
Photo 2 -- Controlled prairie burn
Photo 3 -- Ring-billed Gull
OOOH, I love #3 - close up, monotone color, and that eye looking straight at the viewer!
I too love number 3. There is something about that one eye and for me, it does tell a story.
Don't start another thread just keep them coming here. It is easier to find. And I vote #3 also.

I'm going to go completely against the tide. I liked the first boat shot. All those lines made me do an instant double-take, and the lines running parallel to the boats you can see give a sense of motion. The second and third shots are good, but they both struck me as too similar to who knows how many other shots. If you're going to take the same picture everybody else does, it better pop compared to everybody else's.
The robin photo is cute, but there isn't that much of the robin showing. Shooting down might have revealed more and given the whole image more depth. The prairie burn has action and a focal point, and isn't what you see usually, so it should command attention. And the gull shot is wonderful.
So, for three pix, I'd go the first boat, the prairie burn and the gull.

Gull has some character. Probably a photo contest judge. Has my vote.
first one has too much in it, seems there is no point to pull you into the shot.( the boat shots) I like foggy morning the best
in the next 3 shots I like the gull shot the best
[quote=Photobuff photo 1 being too busy in the eyes of one viewer and the best of the bunch in the eyes of another.
That's what makes it so hard for me to pick contest entries unless I have one that seems to stand head and shoulders above the others.[/quote]
#3 foggy--is best.
#1 not just buzy but buzy/buzy/buzy.
#2 not bad
