For the first time today, I tried shooting RAW. Actually, what I did was shoot RAW + Large (fine) with my Canon Rebel T3i.

But something is amiss. There are two files per shot, but they are both jpegs and exactly the same size.

When I open them with Paint Shop Pro X4, neither one opens in RAW lab, just the regular editing space.

Is there some kind of defect in the camera's software perhaps? Anyone heard anything along that line? Or is there some special way to open RAW lab that I can't find?

Thanks for any input anyone has.

When I shoot RAW+JPG-Fine with my SX50 I get a JPG file and a CR2 file. I can then right click on the CR2 file and so an "Open With" and select PSPx4 and it opens in RAW Lab.

Are you possibly doing something in the import, or maybe with DPP that is automatically processing the RAW file and then resaving it??

When you review them in camera what does the camera tell you?

Go to the PSPx4 and see in the support your camera in RAW. I had the same problem with Elements 8 both photos were JPG and found it did not support my SX50 RAW files.
Good Luck

I shoot the same way, RAW + L, with my T3i; however, I use Elements 9 to open and edit the Raw files; perhaps your PSP doesn't support the CR2 format? Also, how do you download them from your camera? Do you use the Canon EOS Utility program that came with your camera? If so, you can also open and edit the RAW files in there, then convert and save them as jpegs to open in a different program.

Good question. I didn't think of that. OK.. So I went to "info" and there it indicates that the camera has RAW + large files, and the sizes, around 20 mb, is about right.

I will also connect the camera again, and try to see how the files are identified before they got transferred.

Joe, I wonder if you're experiencing the same 'problem' I once did? I USED to view/copy my photos from the camera directly, using the cable from camera to computer. When I viewed the photos I saw two CR2's instead of one jpg and one cr2.
THEN, I removed the card from the camera, read directly from it in the computer, and saw the proper files... one of each.

I got in the habit many years ago, using the cable from camera to computer and now that I'm shooting raw, must try to remember to remove the card. There are those who say it can be harmful, using the cable from camera to computer, but I've done it, without harm since my first digital camera... many years ago. Been fortunate I guess. Good luck.

Wait a minute guys!!!

I have a Canon SX50, use PaintShopPro x4 for most of my editing (along with Picassa), and ALWAYS use the cable to transfer my files from the camera to the computer.

I use the Canon Camera Window that came on the CD to transfer the files.

When I have shot the RAW+JPG-fine way, the files transferred as CR2 for the 'raw' plus a JPG of each shot!! Then I either use Canon's DPP to open the CR2, or right-click the CR2 file and tell it to open with PSPx4. When I tell it to open with PSPx4 it opens directly into RAW Lab. I can also open the CR2 files with Picasa.

Well, I have tried every which way to get Paintshop pro to access the pictures from the camera, and from the SD card itself, but no go. I have a book on using Paintshop Pro, and it clearly describes the steps to edit RAW files, but when I follow the steps, at least I think I am, it does not work.

Well, I'm gaining a little. I have transferred them by cable and by putting the card directly into the computer. Both ways, I just get two JPEGs. However, when I took a shot just in RAW, my program had no trouble identifying it as a CR2 and opening to the RAW editor.

I have tried opening the files directly, without transferring them at all, and PSPx4 simply cannot access the files on the camera at all. (I usually download with Photosuite)

Next step...I will just try it again. And if it still does not work, my guess is that the problem is in camera.

I have also downloaded directly via Windows Explorer, but like the way Canon Camera Window does it, creating a new folder for each month so that as I go forward (at least until further organizing them) the photos are very nicely organized so I can find them.

Try shooting in raw only and downloading check the camera playback to make sure it says raw. Make sure you're import setting in the program don't convert to the raw to jpeg.

When you downloaded these photos I presume they were all put in the same folder. If you use your computer's file manager do you actually see two identically named photographs with the same size and both with a .jpg extension in that folder? That's not a likely scenario since the second file downloaded with the same name would overwrite the first.

This is the format, for example: 2136(1).jpg 2136.jpg 2137(2).jpg 2137.jpg etc.

Did you perform the download more than 1 time?
