I like the silhouette bird in #2, did you get some shots of just it (no boat) with the sunrise?

Would you post the original for #1? I'd like to see it.

Hi Bgenie, Here is the original on #1 and I cropped #2 not sure what to do to improve iether one.

I like the cropped version of the bird silhouette. If you can straiten it a little so the post it is standing on is strait (therefore no longer something to gain attention away from the bird) it would be perfect.

For the naval ship at sunset. Believe it or not, that is a very nice photo without being modified. I don't understand why editing this shot to that extreme "saves it"... at least not in the way it was done. The mod looks extremely noisy, taking away from the overly enhanced sunset. Also, typically, things in the foreground of a sunset are silhouetted, so changing the photo so that the anchors stand out and the sailors uniform is white seems unnatural because the light is suddenly coming from 2 directions instead of one, with no explanation of the second light source.
I do agree that the car in the lower right should have been cropped out.

If you feel you must modify it, I'd suggest enhancing the sunset a little less, then darkening in the boats (both the navy and the schooner) and officer onshore (which will make the sunset stand out more, instead of competing with it), and keeping (if possible) the red-white-blue in the wrap around the deck because the sun will shine through that and you should be able to see those colors.

BGenie, thanks so much for the tips and your right, I worked to hard on that pic actually over doing it, with just a little cropping the pic is fine, thanks for sharing that. I was trying to show details on the ship and brighten the officer standing watch all the while taking away from the true subject. This is a lesson well learned thank you.

No Prob. Understanding light is difficult at times.
Hope you don't mind if I played a little with the original cropped photo you posted last...
Can you see what I did? It's just a little copy/paste 'magic'... I can see the edit, but with a light smudge or blending tool, you won't be able to.

BTW, This is also a good 'Old & New' photo...

Sittin in the mornin' sun, I'll be sittin when the evenin' come, watching those ships roll in, and I'll watch them roll away again...

That is amazing thanks so much for this edit, I wondered what it would look like without those post, fantastic you made my day, I like this pic much better, and I think Otis Redding comes to mind...

Well since you like it, here's what I did...
In the middle post, you have a light gradient... the right side of the post is lighter (closer to the sun) then the left. So I 'copied' a section of the ocean and sky right next to the post on the right side and pasted/layered it over the right side of the post. I then repeated the process on the left side. I do not have a smudge or blending tool on this computer, if I did, I would have blended the slight lighting difference so You could not see the copied rectangle. If you have a smudge tool, be careful using it on the waves, it'll be easy to wipe them out and ruin the whole effect.
You are lucky the posts didn't go into the cloud/light layer, that would have been a much harder fix.

The post on the right, I copied the ocean and pasted it completely over the post. Then I took a line tool, and drew a strait line for where the boat should be. Then I copy/pasted a square of color from the boat on the right side of the line, over the ocean (paste) that overlapped the boat.

I am sure this is a lot easier in a software that is meant for PP, but honestly, it took me maybe 10 minutes to do.

I think removing those posts does more to 'save' this photo then making the sunrise brighter (IMHO) lol
