Could be but I've gotten a heat worning after about 11 minutes and the camera shut down at about 12:30... just a thought.

I haven't done exposures running into minutes, nor have I done long video. I'm wondering about the relationship between shooting a long exposure on Bulb and shooting a movie of several minutes. I know heating of the sensor is an issue. Maybe that should be a separate post.

Oh far out SharpShooter, its not that hard, I do it all the time.
All ya gotta do is double and halve and count how many times ya did it.
Presto I got 10 fingers so its a cinch to get it right.
But it works better if ya chuck an extra one in, so its count to 10 and then add one.

Yes, but Jim, to use your method, does one need to be a MENSA card carrying member? I've misplaced my card, and if I were any smarter, I'd remember where I left it!!
Thanks for the app info. SS

You can, of course, do some math in your head and get the exposure that way. With your camera set to AV, the ISO , and the f-stop you wish to use for the shot, take a reading without the filter. Then double the shutter duration ten times. Example: you get a reading of 1/125 without the filter. Doubled is 1/60. Doubled is 1/30. Doubled ... 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1st, 2s, 4s, and finally 8s. That will be the equivalent exposure for when the 10 stop filter is in place. Mount your filter, set to Bulb, and shoot away.

That sounds like a good reason to make up a little chart, rather than doing that counting while on location.

I don't think my Hoya came with a chart. How does this look? I just made it. Any errors?

One stop out.
1/30th sec + 10 stops = 30 secs

Nope but I see the problem. You missed out 1/250th sec.

Trying again! This is why I wouldn't want to do this in my head when I'm out shooting. :D

Now for that title?
Maybe "Shutter Change for 10 Stop" and remove the heading of the first column.

Looks good Jerry - for a 10 stop.
Ummm just working on memory here but I just had a thought.
Don't they rate the Hoya as a 9 stop?
But I did say that it doesn't hurt to give an extra stop didn't I, so maybe its a perfect chart for a 9 stop!!

Oh, you're sharp! That's correct, but what's a stop or two when you're experimenting?

Hoya does make the 400ND, their version of "black glass". It rates at 8 2/3 stops. It is another reason I use the long exposure calculator on my iPhone to figure exposures. (The app also helps a lot when I stack that 400ND with other ND filters).
