I was wondering if anyone here does abstract photography. I have seen some nicely done work online but haven't seen any here and thought I would ask.

Mariak, Photographer Jim has some very nice abstracts as does HikerCheryl. I've also seen some very nice geometrics but don't remember who it is. Check'em out. SS

Go to the "Search" function here on the forum and type abstract in the search field. You will find lot of photos.

Thank you, there are some very interesting pieces there. Very inspiring. Search works very well, I shall use it more often.

I was inspired by an abstract photograph shown to me by a photography instructor at MICA (where I was studying painting) and I started taking photography classes and have been doing them ever since. Here is one. In this case all I did was zoom in and crop out any surrounding give away landmarks and then "only the colors were changed to protect the innocent"

It is a question I struggle with. I spent most of my life as a painter and abstract art was what I loved to work at, it was harder than figurative art because you had no models for emotions or ideas. You could paint a person who was sad but how to paint the concept of sadness.
In photography, I am trying to learn how to create abstractions by planning out what I want to create and using multiple exposures, panning, changing WB, whatever it takes. I think I am discovering that abstract photography is different by a lot than painting. When I go out with the camera, I look for patterns, textures, shadows and try to control them after I find them. In painting, I had to actually create them. I am not saying one or the other is better, just that it is a difference I am trying to understand and master. If I see a few leaves lying in a pleasing pattern and I shoot it, is this an abstract or a photo of leaves. It's a puzzlement.
Well, that enough mind dribbles for now. I shall go practice shooting multiples of glass bottles.

It was a legitimate question. Abstract photography existed long before the "digital age".

The digital age has expanded the artists palette to express abstract.
Painters existed long before photography...Charcoal artists existed long before painters...Cheers.

Here is another abstract photo. I thought all I had to do was show abstract art and it would sell...NOT! I rarely put these in the gallery where I show, what sells is mostly mementoes of local scenes for tourists. I guess it also depends on the gallery, but my take on the Baltimore art scene is that abstract art is not taken seriously. DC, on the other hand is a different story, you see examples of abstract art/design all over town.
