USA a Christian Nation ?

A wise man said:

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it."

Who said it ?

Everything I read indicates it was a quote by Stephen Colbert.

Let me hold off revealing the source until a few more people weigh in.

I am waiting for our devout Christians to chime in. Let's see who they think the author is.

Why should one guess when tools such as Google are readily available?

For the fun of it.

Further, I reject the premise that the person who first said this was a wise man. "A wise guy" - yes. "A wise man" - hardly.

You're entitled to your opinion, even when it is wrong.

Yes, it does, doesn't it ?

But let's give the good, devout Christians here weigh in a little more before I give the attribution.

I don't disagree with the statement at all. I disagree with the notion that we (USA) are somehow not helping the poor and disadvantaged. This county (USA) is easily the most generous and giving country on the planet. The people of the US have shown their care and generosity time and time again and your implication makes me want to puke! What we complain about is the waste in government and the FACT that government can't find away to run a successful welfare program without widespread rampant abuse. We often find ourselves buying flat screen TVs instead of food and medicine. Okay end of rant, sorry.

We could wait in artificial suspense, or we could just acknowledge that the first respondent got it right five minutes after your original post. It was Elizabeth Colbert Busch' brother who made this quote in December 2010.
