Correct mborn. While I do want the camera to continue focusing in AF-C mode, I do not want the shutter to release until focus has been obtained. This is not a focus lock question, it is a shutter lock issue.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate all the help I can get. Nikon jumping in to explain this error would be nice. :)

Yes, the d800's manual correctly states that AF-C overrides the focus priority setting. That isn't what's causing the glitch, however. I set my camera to AF-S, as David Busch instructs for trap focus on page 175. Despite setting to AF-S, focus priority fails to work as designed.

I wonder :
1- how many cameras are affected?
2- If it can be fixed with a firmware update?
3- If Nikon plans to do anything -- and, if so, when?

Me too. But in the mean time I'm going to work on conditioning myself to look for the green light before completing the shutter release.

I have the same issue. All this time I thought that I've been doing something incorrect in the settings - have tried everything. "Trap" focus will be really helpful when the firmware is updated. Thanks to the OP for raising this issue.

Guessing that I am late to this topic, I briefly checked this site and found nothing on this. Perhaps I missed it but here goes:

On the D800, apparently Nikon decided to remove the important feature of being able to block taking a picture when the camera is out of focus. These settings can be found in menu items a1 and a2. If set to allow shutter release only when in focus, the camera ignores the setting and always allows the shutter to activate. This results in many out of focus shots. (Yes, I have the latest firmware.)

Mine works as intended.

This problem is discussed on other forums; however, I would appreciate your input on this.

Thanks in advance.

You are a better mountain man than I. Went out this morning and tried it on a couple flying blue herons. Impossible! Whenever I checked the green dot, the bird was out of the frame. So for me, that's not a solution -- but I wish you luck. Let me know how it goes.

Peter, I assume that your response got mixed into my quote. Do I understand that your D800 does not release the shutter when you are out of focus?? Are you sure? I would be curious as to when you got yours to compare its date of mfg. etc. Any other info would be helpful like was it ever in for service and what version firmware you have.

Thanks

I too was wondering why I was getting just too many shots out of focus. After some thought and checking, I discovered this issue. On one hand I am relieved to have found this, on the other hand I am upset my new camera is not functioning as designed. To say the least, I am also very disappointed in Nikon. Also, I went to their site but lost patience searching for a way to report this.

Why would you Want that feature? I would find it annoying.

1- On a fast moving subject, I have to rely on auto-focus but I do not want the shutter to release until auto-focus is complete. Otherwise the shot is out of focus.
2- If you find it annoying, you can change the appropriate setting and shoot the way you want.

retlaw: Love the name.
What about Wolley Segap?

So, Walter, have you tried doing a reset to defaults?

A lot of cameras have this option, which is more useful for certain settings in continuous mode.

Big Bummer!! I can not check for a green dot when birds are flying and I have to keep my eyes on the target. This really sucks.

That's what the option is for. If you're shooting a burst, the camera will wait until it's in focus before firing if you've chosen that option.

1- Wow, I did not expect anyone to make fun of my name on this forum. I do wish that my parents had applied their sense of humor to one of my siblings instead.
2- Yes, Wally, I did a hard reset and it made no change.

Thanks for the input.
