I have been approached to have some of my photos taken in an around the area framed and displayed in a new restaurant. Now comes the problem. I have always only printed 5 x 7 copies of my photos for my own pleasure and have never enlarged them, and they are asking for 8 x 10. My camera quality is always been set at RawS + JPG (S) Canon. Will they be able to be enlarged without losing quality. I hope I have explained this properly. Thanking you in advance.
You should be able to print 8x10 and not lose any quality. It's when you go larger than 8.5x11 that you start running the risk if there's not enough mp. Resize on your computer and look at the smallest detail - that should show you if there's any distortion. Like with your avatar - look closely at the legs and feathers on the wings.

Thank you, what setting do you recommend so this does not become an issue in the future. I cannot go by my avatar is was just an accident of me moving when he was leaving the deck. I just like the blurred look of the wings.
What model camera do you have?
Also, do you have the original RAW or JPGs that were not PP'd?
Here is a site that has a nice chart that shows the max print sizes relative to megapixels. I would not print below 200 ppi.
http://www.design215.com/toolbox/print_guide.phpKeep in mind your old photos won't have the same pixel count because they were shot in (S). I would highly suggest shoot at max resolution.

For 8x10 or 8.5x11 I usually resize to 1200x800 from 3888x2592. When you try going larger is when you lose.

I have a canon 7d and yes I do have the originals.
It's 18mp, I don't even have to do the math. Your prints should come out fine.

Thank you so much your a godsend. Do you recommend this setting for future pictures as I am going to Nova Scotia for some whale watching and bird watching and I have to present my photos to another interested party. They are trying to promote local talent in the area.

I prefer to shoot at the highest quality but I do large prints from time to time. I feel it's better to have all of the data available. Shooting in (S) lowers your pixel count by 1/4 according to Canon's website. (Your print size is not reduced by 1/4 though)
cindij - I shoot a 7D as well, but only the large (standard) RAW files. The camera manual will give you an idea of the number of shots you can store for different sized CF cards and picture formats. I use 16GB SanDisk Extreme CF cards and I can save 500+ raw files per card. Depending on the situation, I can shoot 2 or 3 days without needing to change cards if I can't off load. You should look at getting a 1 or a few more cards for your trip as a somewhat easy solution.

If you are shooting at full resolution that the camera is capable of, you should be able to print 11x14 or 16x20 without any noticeable degrading.

Wahawk - Thank you, I really need to read up on that part and try to understand how all the different quality settings affect the picture. As I said I have always left it on the S and have never changed it. Worked well when I printed the pictures.
