Ok guys and gals, we've been down this road before.

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 4. Previously loaded JPEG files from my Nikon P90 (never had to deal with RAW photos). Now have a Nikon D3100 and shooting both RAW & JPEG but STILL cannot get RAW (NEF) files to load to photoshop.

I've been to the Adobe website and did the download that was recommended. Even loaded the DNG converter.

Still...when I try loading a RAW (NEF) file all I get is "WRONG TYPE OF FILE".

What the heck am I doing wrong???!!!
Can ANYONE help me?

If I need to update to a new PSE program, which one do you recommend that will support my RAW files?

The Nikon Electronic Format (Nikon RAW) was re-formatted since you purchased PhotoShop Elements 4. There may be an upgrade, but most likely NOT for PS E4.

I just purchased PS Elements 10 on Amazon.com for US$46:

you can transfer your NEF files (nikon raw) using nikon transfer and open them up with nikon view (on cd that came with your camera. second suggestion your camera is new, your pse is old. did it have adobe camera raw in it? ACR first showed up in photoshop7, pse 10 is on such a sale right now at diffwerent sites, if your computer can handel it thats what i would get. if your computer is like mine and was last used by fred flintstone, 9why i still am using pse2) try for something like pse6 or 7. I was trying to experiment with RAW but decided its too much hassle on an archaic system like mine. all this new tech, IPAD's IPHONE's I prefer IHOP. mmmm pancakes.

Do this using copies of the original NEFs: rename them to D90 file names. Just try one to see if it works for you.

Anyway...the order has only been CONFIRMED...not yet shipped. <giggles> Thanks for the info and the lead. I had been battling this for a couple of weeks but didn't want to shell out the bucks...but this was do-able. Thanks 'Sir' Nikonian.

How the heck do you re-name them to D90 file names? Never heard of that.

Nikon should have some software that works with the RAW files. If you save the output as TIFF or JPEG (remember, JPEG is "lossy" if you intend to do any more editing), you can import into PSE.

Thanks...refer to original message. Already aware of the JPEG issue which I have been using in the past. PSE 4 is too old... and I'm needing the RAW/NEF loads. Awwwww shoot...I finally broke down and ordered an upgrade for PSE last night. <happy dance>
