I'm looking for recomendatons on inexpensive TTL flash units.

I'm looking at the Vivitar DF-383. Any comments, suggestions?

I use flash infrequently but want a better one than the one on my Nikon D40x

I' recommend the Nikon SB400. It will balance well on the D40.

But the SB400 doesn't have bounce flash, right?

Bounce Function (Tilt) = Flash head tilts up to 90° with click-stops at 0°, 60°, 75°, 90°.
per

No swivel, which could bounce light off of sidewalls, or backwall.

Check out the Sunpak PZ42X. It is supposed to E-TTL and runs around $150.
I have not used it myself.

By the way I would not need rehab as i don't drink alcohol, take illegal drugs, or on parole from prison. But I did " shoot a man in Reno oncw just to watch him die..."

as u know canon and nikon run a close 1st and 2nd for being the most popular. And if you have ever checked, canon is still the number one seller and probably always will be.

Nissin makes some good flashes compatible with modern SLR TTL metering. I use a Nissin Di622 on my Canon - fully compatible with E-TTL-II and has bounce/swivel functionality. It's slightly less powerful than the flagship Canon flashes, but it also carries a more palatable street price around $150-200, depending on where you look.
