It ie probably worse than you think. The city is laid out like half a wheel. Jefferson ave. the base. The spokes are Gratiot, Woodward and Grand River. Buildings are boarded up on all. When you get to the suburbs there is When the city was blowin and gi'in the unions and Gov. Pumped up pensions.i am aware of a few government employees who receive two government pensions.

News showed photos of city. It is a total mess. How the hell folks let that happen is crazy. I'm ashamed of the administration of Detroit.

Sarge,
The demise of Detroit began long before the turn of century. Poor city planning and reduced property values led many to abandon the city and it's office space, manufacturing locations and warehousing facilities going as far back as the 70's.
This type of inner city blight has plagued numerous cities in the US. Just look at what has become of Trenton, New Jersey and that's the state capitol. The city has become a war zone and the city budget a disaster. Even police and emergency services were curtailed and State Police were called to police the streets.
Some cities had foresight, such as Seattle, Washington where they revamped the transportation system and rezoned huge portions of the city to attract both small business and residential development with a viable "GREEN PLAN" for development. But, this type of planning is not conducive to a welfare state or idiotic government master plans that call for huge public housing projects to house the poor.

Detroit is across the river and the border from Windsor Ontario Canada. The two cities are less than a mile apart.
Windsor, as a Canadian automotive city, has suffered badly too. Unemployment is high. Property values have fallen. The population has dropped (although not as precipitously as Detroit.) But it is still an attractive, safe place. It has a lovely waterfront, an art gallery, good municipal services, a modest crime rate and a reasonably healthy downtown. Why has Windsor survived while Detroit has become what someone called "the American Pompeii."

It is called private ownership. The city does not own the sports teams!

If the city of Detroit is going bust, how the hell do they afford their professional (over the top expensive) sports teams

Highest crime rate in the USA, killings etc, Ok many will blame the government, but the residents have to take a portion of the blame, surely.

There is no such think as a filthy house just the people who live in it, cars are no danger, it's the driver, and so on.

Same for guns but a lot don't seem to know it.

that makes it simple then...just move the city to the suburbs

The sports teams are supported by the suburb residents. The city is mainly black. Look at the people in attendance of hockey and football.

Maybe in years gone by, if the Mayors and elected officials of Detroit knew their failure to act would result in the city going bankrupt and their pension payments being terminated or reduced, they would have done things differently.

I doubt they would have done anything differently because IMHO greed never looks to the future, only the present.

Detroit tried some bone head thing in the 80's, If you lived in the suburbs and worked in the city you were charged an extra city tax.

In the 70's they were going to buss the inner city kids to the schools in the suburbs and bus the suburb kids to the inner city schools. Unfortunately some of the buses caught on fire and the program was stopped. I lived there at the time and I do know this as fact.

How about the local government kissing union derrières and putting the debt on future generations.

The GM union demanded so much ( and the treat of it spreading to other manufacturers ) that they all left Detroit.

Union greed can bleed any city or industry to death AND so can the greedy MBA's, CEO's, CFO's, ( whose salaries are obscene).

Then we have government employees, city, state and Federal, who get bonuses for just doing their job???????????????
