I am in my mid 70s and enjoy the heck out of processing raw photos......and enjoy the heck taking them too. So what's the big deal?

Are you asking me that question? I enjoy PP on my RAWs as well.

If you own a Canon DSLR the Canon DPP program comes with the camera and processes RAW. Of course, Photoshop and Lightroom will process RAW files also. the Zoner Picture program is about 70 dollars. There is a 30 day free trial. The free version doesn't do RAW.
You are right, RAW gives you wonderful control over your photos.

Why would anyone let the camera decide how to present the photo? The photographer decided on the framing of the subject the aperture and shutter speed. (unless they are members of the unfortunate majority who are too intellectually lazy to learn the basics.) Why should the photographer let the camera decide how the information will be processed? That is like going to dinner and letting the waiter order the wine.

Many people who don't do much post processing aren't necessarily intellectually lazy, they just may not be that interested in learning the techniques and intricacies. And I know lots of folks who take the waiters wine suggestions. Often, in a fine restaurant, the waiters will know more about the wines they stock then most of their customers. In any case this was about RAW vs jpeg. Using jpeg doesn't stop you from taking control of your camera.

Hear Hear... as one poster said and as so many seemed to miss when I posted all that drivel. When fine dining is involved it seems to be somewhat more intelligent to take advantage of the training given waiters on the wine selections from the cellar.

And certainly, the money spent on finer camera's, using Jpeg DOES offer more control of the camera technology, as opposed to limiting said control. The statement that people choose not to use Jpeg because it limits (or degrades) the process to the manufacturer controlling the Image Quality is purely idiotic.

The smarter person knows the complete capacity of his/her camera and gathers results from the camera that may preclude a large amount of the POST PROCESSING (For those who don't practice full use of the camera... POST PROCESSING is the work done AFTER the file is taken from the camera) that could be totally unnecessary if the camera is used to it's full extent.

RAW is not to digital, as Negative is to film.

RAW, in fact is the crap that the manufacturer uses to control the output and force the user/purchaser come up with a final image, which is still final only in the eyes of the shooter. RAW is using the camera WITHOUT any control over the final image.

At that point, the shooter is no longer a photographer, but rather a Graphic Artist.

But hey, it's all just drivel to many... probably because it requires rational thought.

I agree with you. I use a Canon and shoot in both RAW and JPG. I use the Jpg for sorting and selecting and the RAW for final work Editing, competition's and printing.
For final work, RAW is the way to go.
Thanks.

Just a rhetorical question, thought that would be clear, not personal.
