Well I bit the bullet and turned my camera over to raw. Honestly,I think the unprocessed Raw pictures straight out of the camera turn many people off. ( Dull pictures etc.). It did for me! I downloaded Zoner Picture Studio and started working with my new raw files. With a few flicks of the processing sliders I was blown away. The difference was like Night and Day. I wish I'd gone to Raw 5 years ago. Try Raw with an easy program like Zoner and you will be amazed.

If you own a Canon DSLR the Canon DPP program comes with the camera and processes RAW. Of course, Photoshop and Lightroom will process RAW files also. the Zoner Picture program is about 70 dollars. There is a 30 day free trial. The free version doesn't do RAW.
You are right, RAW gives you wonderful control over your photos.

The free Zoner Program now does Raw! I downloaded and used Zoner Free with some of my first Raw files. That's what made me want to buy the full version of Zoner Picture Studio. Zoner Free works perfectly with Nikon Nef files.

Interesting. Are you sure you aren't using the 30 day free trial? I was just on their website.

You can't use images straight from the camera in RAW they have to be processed

RAW and JPEG are two different things, I shoot almost all sports, I don't have time for RAW

Of course you can use the images straight from the camera and edit them. That's what your post processing program does. You just cannot change the RAW file, you have to save the result as JPG, TIFF or something else.

Some editors keep the original RAW file and a separate sidecar file with your edits to be applied whenever you reopen the image.

You have just said what I said, you edit them before use if raw.

Oh this is tired JR.
I am sick of seeing it written.
Guess what. I can't see a jpg. I have a disk full of them and I cannot see a single one of them.
I have to put the disk in my drive, load into my software, which then converts that to a representation on my monitor in green red white and blue dots and then that approximates the image that I took.
It still isn't really my image but it fools my brain and eyes into thinking that it is.

I can't even see my transparencies right out of the camera. They have to be developed and mounted. Is there a point to this?

If you have a program that supports Raw files you can use them for processing into Jpeg's. That's what I meant.

I might have been but I don't think so. I clicked the free choice the first time and was processing Raw files within 15 min's.

Hi jsnear, like you I give up on RAW from time to time not having much success so I usually go back to jpeg which is excellent on my camera. I have used Zoner Photo Studio 15 for some time now, but when using RAW editing this is where I don't have much luck.
Can you tell me how you proceed down the list starting with exposure etc. I attach a photo for you to play with.
Hope you don,t mind
Cheers JE

Exposure=0.0
Darken Highlights=0
Blackpoint=0
Contrast=0
Clarity=61
Temp=5900
Tint=0
Saturation=100
Vibrance=1--

Try that on your picture and see how it works for you.
You might want to add Unsharp 25-100 depending how it looks.Problems with internet speed so could not post the rendered picture. Remember I'm just a novice. Others know much more than I do on the board. Raw is very new to me.
