What do others do?

I am not a professional photographer....just a grandmother with a Nikon D800 that I dearly love. I recently fell and broke my shoulder which means I will be in a sling for 6 mos. This translates into not using my camera because it is just too heavy. I have cellphone camera and another smaller Nikon but it is just not the same. Tripod is out of the question because I find it hard to manipulate with one hand. What do others do in this situation? Sell their equipment and find a new hobby or what?

Hire an assistant? Maybe one of the grandkids could help with the gear... Or, just take a break, regain your strength and mobility, then resume. In the meantime, maybe a nice P&S would suffice. Good luck! :D

To be truthful, and after shooting for 50 years, I usually keep shooting until I really agravate the injury and have to stop...then I complain about it.
If I were you, I'd get used to the small Nikon, or spend a lot of time editing your old photos.

Linda, that sounds horrible, I'm so sorry for you :( . Have you thought possibly about a monopod? With just one leg to deal with it may be versatile enough to carry but still give the support that you need to steady the camera one-handed. Don't sell your equipment just yet, you will probably learn some very valuable skills before this is all over.

Use the time to learn new photography skills - I read over an hour a day (after work) and still there's so much more to learn. There are many photography internet sites to explore and learn from as well as many books to read (including your D800 manual). Six months will fly by & then you'll have more skills to use with that super camera.

How about a sling for your camera too? There's always a way for the determined.

Ooooooh! Like a coal miner! Maybe she can get one of those beer can hats to go along with it and have the best day ever!

Well, not sure about the beer hat, but she would also need a remote shutter control:

There's also the chest strap option:

Why not just wait 6 months until the sling is gone?
