As a photographer of Colonial gravestones when I lived in Boston, I discovered early on that "speling" was a fad. Some burying grounds had stones on graves of a prominent local family, the name spelled three or four different ways by different carvers. Carvers used the modal S (looks like an integral sign in math which it is) and thorn, a "Y" shaped letter that, with superscript "e," was used to spell the definite article.
Growing up in the 40s and 50s, good spelling was the mark of an educated person. No more. Even I use spellcheck.

But is it possible to have a spell checker connected to this forum?
Me being a Dutchy I really need that more than others.
I'm a less than great speller, and not a very good typist either.
If you install either Google Chrome or the Google tool bar for IE you will get a spell checker in your browser. I gives you a red underline for misspelled words and several choices for correction. When you right click the word.

I can't spell and I DO NOT CARE, if I can't spell theres always someone to tell me how.

I find it interesting that photography is about communications and yet some of the contributors seem barely literate.
I have found that people that read heavily are better spellers and communicators.
I have no intention of castigating the bad spellers, but I will classify them in my brain.
Well--it's hard to know where to start, since the opening message from wyndjammr had a misspelled word, and the post by johnr9999 above did too, as well as a grammatical error. The many errors in posts on this and other sites can indicate many things--carelessness, lack of education, lack of time, dyslexia, fingers faster than brain, etc., etc. Some of those errors are indeed jarring, and would cause me to reprimand and correct my child or grandchild if uttered at home, but I agree with the sentiment that we should all look beyond the form to the substance, on this site as well as in life. Let's not "sweat the small stuff" and enjoy the wisdom the members here are willing to share, free of charge.
As a foreigner living in California since 1981 I have no problems when my writing is going to be corrected. I can learn from the corrections.
Let me explain why!
I can survive with beside the American English also with British English, the Dutch language, German, French and Indonesian. All the above because of education and/or having lived there.
Yes there is even a big difference between American and British English and sometimes confusing.
Because of my background as an engineer I can speak, write and understand that language easy. That is the same with the Real Estate language after 24 years.
I am started reading a book by Stephen T. Sinatra, The Sinatra Solution: Metabolic Cardiology. I have not studied medicines and to understand the many medical words, I have never seen, is only possible with an English/Dutch dictionary beside me.
Pronunciations is also a pain in the neck.
Again I do not mind to be corrected, because I am never be old enough (75) to learn.
I'm 71 at our age we went through the school of hard knocks.

Yup, noticed that, and decided, in the spirit of the original message, to let it go and hope for the best :)

I,m a terrible speller as well.My work has alway's been the language of math, and the worse part of that was having to fill out weekly reports ! Ha...I think a lot of people used to get gold stars for pointing out others mistakes, and yet others,it effects them like pulling your fingernails down a chalkboard.

Dear friends,
I would like to respectfully suggest that unless someone misspells a photography-related technical term, where the misspelling might affect something like an expensive purchasing decision, that we give each other the benefit of the doubt and let these things go. Sometimes they are innocent typos, sometimes they may be the poster's attempt to inject a glimpse of his/her personality into the post.... whatever the reason, maybe we can agree to just let these things go. I really gain a lot from the photography information on this forum. The posts that pick on other people's spelling just make me fell bad.
Thanks.

Well, now I'm confused. You seem to espouse overlooking errors in favor of content, and then you point out errors and ignore content. Your willingness to point out errors is something I said I was loathe to do, but you jumped right on it. Interesting.
The Firefox browser has a built in spell checker that will work on any web site you are on so regardless of where you are you get misspelling flagged. There is also a downloadable app for Internet Explorer that will let it do the same thing, I can't remember what it is called but if you Google Internet Explorer spell checker you should be able to find it. By the way, I had four typos flagged as I typed this ☺
Misspelling has always bothered me, however, I overlook it as much as possible on forums such as this as some people type too fast, don't proofread, use their phones that auto correct words, etc.
The thing that bothers me is when people type on forums like they are texting. I absolutely hate that! I have a hard time using text language when texting.
My daughter is a teacher and she said that kids are handing in papers with words spelled as if they are texting because they don't know how to spell....That is what is sad!!!!
