Canon 7D, Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro, Canon 430EX11 Speedlight and softbox connected directly to flash, on camera hot shoe. All taken at 1/200 sec, f/16, flash set on manual (1/4 to 1/2 power), handheld and manual focus. I also used Photoshop Elements 11 for post-processing... slowly learning a few "tricks".

1.) Is your speedlight tipped forward at all?
2.) Can you alter the light pattern of your speedlight?
I set my speedlight to widest illumination pattern, and dropped the built-in plastic diffuser in front of lens. This spreads the light across the face of softbox, providing wide, soft illumination.

1.) Speedlight slightly tips forward, and the face of the softbox angles forward allowing the flash to go down toward the subject. The bottom part of the softbox is a couple of inches behind the end of the macro lens, so does not give maximum lighting needed. I am surprised it works as good as it does. I should receive my off-camera flash cable tomorrow and I have an adjustable arm, but no bracket yet. I hate to add all of the extra weight to my set-up and may just use this simple set-up for awhile. I'll post a better picture in macro setups topic later.
2.) I don't know if I can alter the pattern of my flash. I'll have to check into that. I do have my drop-down wide angle diffuser in the down positon though.
Keep steering me in the right direction.

My only concern is the 'bent' softbox, which occludes light from bottom edge of softbox. Better to angle speedlight, not softbox.

Hmmm. I really like the looks of that. I think it very well might be able to replace me using a bracket and off-camera flash cable. I just took my flash off the camera, held it about an inch higher than the hot shoe and tilted the flash and it placed the softbox right at the rim of my lens. I'll have to check the dimensions out on the extender. If not too expensive, would well be worth a try.
