Has anyone been to Yellowstone Park in late September? Can you tell me what to expect in the way of weather and temps? Any helpful tips, suggestions, places to avoid? Thanks!

I have been there in June and July and have encountered snow! Not much, but it got cold and with rain in between the flakes. Be prepared for all kinds of weather. We had electrics on with long johns when we were visiting on our motorcycle. Went over the Beartooth and had a huge snow storm on June 28th. Beautiful place to take lots of pictures. Just be careful of the bears! Looking forward to seeing pictures. Stay on the paths, especially around the bubbling bogs. Not good if you were to fall in.

Last year on the BBC there was a series of four programmes showing Yellowstone Park through the seasons. It looked like a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year. Each season had had its highlights.
Have a great trip

expect the unexpected. bring extra everything.
Do not feed the bears, well it is ok to feed the bears, if you do, do not STOP feeding the bears.
Buffalo, ( Bison ) are cute, smell bad, are ill tempered.
You may see coyote, fox, wolf, black bears at random ranges.
You might consider wide angle, 70-200. 100-400 glass or any permutation, You can use most every lens you have.
Rain Sleeve, good idea. Little Grand Canyon great shooting ops.
Colors on thermal features, mud pots, can be spectacular.
If hiking in bear country go with someone you can out run :)
Enjoy, post some images.
Have fun.

I've been there in mid-September a half dozen times in the last 20 years. I've crawled out of a tent when it was 25 degrees/snowing and other times it was 50 degrees at sunrise. I've seen rain and I've enjoyed magnificent weather. . . . . as warm as 75 with brilliant sunshine! In other words, layer your outerwear, wear good boots, have rain gear, protect your equipment, use a polarizer, and get ready for just about anything. HEED the wildlife warnings and be smart. . . . a grizzly sow or a 900 pound bison is not to be ignored. Finally, get ready for some of the most amazing scenery and wildlife to be found anywhere. I'm going again this September! See you there!

Country, this will my many falls year. YP/GT is a surprising mistress. By that I mean, "what part of the high mountain do you not understand? as Montana Shooter has stated dress warm. If you are going for photo-op dress so that you can stay out into very extreme weather ie snow. I have seen it be snow predawn and had sunburn on legs by afternoon. So dress in layers. PM me if you like. "JR"

Spent three seasons in YNP 2008-2020. By all means dress warm it will be colder than warmer and do expect snow. There won't be much traffic so you will have no problem getting around. If there is snow expect the road from Canyon to Roosevelt to close. Hope you have fun

I was there in late September last year. One of the days I was there it rained quite a bit. The rest of the time is was sunny and warm during the daytime and below freezing at night. Have a good trip and let us see your photos of the park.

September is probably the best month to be in YNP. The rut is on so the ungulates are concentrated, have their best racks, and are very active. The bison and elk are most concentrated. The animals are in the lower elevations and that brings the wolves. The bears are in their gorging phase and fall colors will start to show late in the month. Best news is that there are fewer people. Bad news is that the facilities start to close - campgrounds, hotels, restaurants so you may need lodging in West Yellowstone, Gardiner, or Cooke City. Don't sweat the weather - it will be getting cold. Enjoy and I will see you up here.

The seminar filled up within 12 hours of announcement, sorry. We will likely plan one or two for next year though, this was a special offering by request.

I was there last year, September. A very enjoyable time. I only problem was the haze caused from the forest fires in Co., Ut and Wy. Also don't forget about visiting the Grand Tetons.
