OK so really there is no answer... darn it. Everyone knows I am eager to help others out and help them grow but I don't want to step on anyones toes and hurt anyones feelings.

So I guess the answer for me is, if it says comment and it's not worth a "good job" then don't offer any advice on how to improve. ;)

You should certainly help anyone you want to. I'm just saying that I'm only interested in helping someone who has put some initial effort into the picture.

Just don't tell them their pictures are boring and mundane at best, you'll get your very own internet stalker if you do. You've been warned.

LOL, if they are boring and mundane, I have already passed on the opportunity to tell them so.

Just because someone posts a picture and asks for comments, doesn't mean you have to oblige. Sometimes I think they are posted just to make us look silly bending over backwards to find something redeeming about their picture.

I think the point of my question was missed (and I didn't help much as I got off track as well).

I'm not asking how to give or who likes to get C&C. What I'm asking is if a poster asks for Comments, what do they really want.. a pat the back and a "job well done" or are they looking for critique?

I think you may be right with "a pat on the back and job well done", but to me they are one and the same. I would hope for both, C and C. You got me thinking so I looked it up in Websters'

Comment, n. a note conveying an illustration or explanation; a remark, observation, criticism.

Critique, a critical examination of any production, a review.

I must admit that I am bemused by some of the images that are posted with c/c requests. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell if a picture is out of focus or if one side is completely blownout or if limbs are chopped off or if there is no, and I mean no, redeeming feature. It's as if someone who has never seen pictures picks up a camera, shoots, and then says "What do you think?" expecting that they have created a masterpiece. Beginner or not, there has to be some thought given to the process. I would be mortified to associate my name with some of the images posted. Guess that's why I use an alias...

see that's my reall issue, I see posts saying "comment" and the image is well, let's simply say, not something that would ever make it off my memory card, now we all have started out somewhere and some of my first posts asking for C&C were just as newb and people offerered their help and slowly I have grown as a photographer (still not where I want to be be but 100 miles from where I started).

Now do these "comment" post want honest feedback so they can grow and learn or do they want a "good job" post?

I'm so thankfull to all those photographers that have offered me honest feedback, even when I didn't want it, cause without them, well my kids would still have green skin tones, OOF features and Auntie Betty would be a big blurry blob.

MWAC. . .I would hope to receive both, a pat & criticism. If it's good, tell me and if it's bad and needs fixing, tell me what I should have done differently.

Well, for what it's worth.....my thoughts and $5 will get you a latte at Starsuckers......I'm guessing that there are lots of folks who wouldn't know the difference between a snapshot and a photo if you smacked them upside the head with a 500mm lens (but don't do it----you might damage the lens!). When I come across something like that I skip on by.
Ditto for the word choice. Judging by the spelling and some of the gibberish that passes for English on here, I often wonder if folks even know what they're asking.
(BTW, c/c means "cranky curmudgeon", right??)
My bottom line is that I know I'm a green amateur with few valid comments to make but I know what I like. So if I like the photos offered I'll make the comment I feel capable of making.
Does that make sense?? Somehow I don't think I addressed the original question as well as it sounded in my head but I hope I've offered something worth offering......

I think I know what you mean. You aren't certain you can legitimately comment on exposure or composition for example but you know that you like a certain image and want to give the photographer positive feedback. And that's a legitimate thing to do. What isn't legitimate is to give every image you see a "good job" or "nice photo" when some of them stink. Slowly, you'll be able to pick out the reasons you like an image or, if critique is requested, how you think it could be better.

Thanks for the translation---you must speak fluent gibberish! LOL But yes, that's pretty much what I was trying to say.
I agree that giving absolutely everything a "thumbs up" renders the comment meaningless. I try to comment only on those submissions that capture my interest, where I hope my words will have even a tiny impact.
As I shoot more and learn my own T1i and SX30, hopefully I'll be able to offer specific suggestions to help someone else and myself become better.
This has been an illuminating topic and I've learned things just from following this thread. Thanks to all for the viewpoints.
