I must admit that I am bemused by some of the images that are posted with c/c requests. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell if a picture is out of focus or if one side is completely blownout or if limbs are chopped off or if there is no, and I mean no, redeeming feature. It's as if someone who has never seen pictures picks up a camera, shoots, and then says "What do you think?" expecting that they have created a masterpiece. Beginner or not, there has to be some thought given to the process. I would be mortified to associate my name with some of the images posted. Guess that's why I use an alias...

see that's my reall issue, I see posts saying "comment" and the image is well, let's simply say, not something that would ever make it off my memory card, now we all have started out somewhere and some of my first posts asking for C&C were just as newb and people offerered their help and slowly I have grown as a photographer (still not where I want to be be but 100 miles from where I started).

Now do these "comment" post want honest feedback so they can grow and learn or do they want a "good job" post?

I'm so thankfull to all those photographers that have offered me honest feedback, even when I didn't want it, cause without them, well my kids would still have green skin tones, OOF features and Auntie Betty would be a big blurry blob.

I fail to believe that you would not have grown on your own. I did and I did it by looking at thousands of good pictures and reading book after book and article after article and practicing card full after card full. I joined BetterPhoto and saw all these great images being honored at the end of each month and being delighted that I understood why they were so good. I'm not a great photographer but I'm fairly competent and once in a while I come up with a gem. But from the beginning, I had some personal pride and humility and never expected to be patted on the back for junk.

I always want constructive criticism when I post on a photo forum, even if I say comment. A photo forum is a place to learn. Why post here just to get a pat on the back. Friends will give you a pat on the back, this is a learning forum. Sure everyone likes nice comments, but.......

Ok, learning a lot but what does it mean when they put c/c? Just wondering since it has been mentioned. Thanks

The problem seems to be that not all people know how to give criticism without coming off like a jerk. So their comments, while well-meaning, and most likely true, ruffle the feathers of our more delicate members, and then you're off and running.

Even if you say you're 'thick-skinned' and 'can take it', two or three reviews with the words "suck" and "horrible" in them can kinda spoil your day, especially when the image in question is their darling little 4-year old, the favored family pet, or in some cases, a rusty nail in the street.

I don't waste my time on the "horrible" as they didn't care enough to make it something "unhorrible". There have been lots of pictures that just need a tweak and I'm more than happy to offer up a tweak.

Ok, if I had read more closely I would have found out what it means, constructive critisism. LOL

I see your point about jerks. Suck and horrible is not criticism, it is just being a rude.

Of course, it's rude. But it's also rude to offer up the aforementioned horrible picture and expect people to give you a guide to taking wonderful pictures in 100 words or less.

OK so really there is no answer... darn it. Everyone knows I am eager to help others out and help them grow but I don't want to step on anyones toes and hurt anyones feelings.

So I guess the answer for me is, if it says comment and it's not worth a "good job" then don't offer any advice on how to improve. ;)

You should certainly help anyone you want to. I'm just saying that I'm only interested in helping someone who has put some initial effort into the picture.
