That whole are has been renovated but the church there, the building as such, has never been changed. That used to be the center of town there.
Here is anecdote....Back in the 1600's there were no taxes because the pioneers had no money and the worst crime was theft at night because there were no lights. Right in front of this church, Place Royale, was where everything was taken care of, such as hangings. The court would rule a person guilty, and the person would be hung up there in front of the towns people. If the crime was really bad, the person's head was cut off and put on a pole on the outside of that Place just to show people what would happen to them if they committed a similar crime. They did have a sort of jail, but the town did not feed the prisoners and I know of one case of adultery where the guy was imprisoned and his wife was responsable to feed him. The prisoners were let ou during the winter months because the jails were not heated and they would die in there.
These are documented as I studied the history and also did genealogy for ten years and used the National Archive as a source for information.
