Greetings All,

I finally decided to take the plunge and upgrade my D300s to a D800. Checking sites like Amazon and B&H, I noticed that they both offer body only and kit options for the same price. Does anyone know why they are the same price? Is that the kit offer includes a returned camera body? I understand that some retailers consider a camera with 200 or fewer shutter releases to be new.

Also, I am sure that as soon as I order this, Nikon will announce a D800s, or drop the price another $300. Does anyone know if they are planning such a diabolical move anytime soon?

The reason that the kit price and the body only price is the same is that what they throw in really doesn't have a lot of value....i.e. cleaning cloth..cheap protective filter for the lens...etc.

don't sweat it....take the free stuff and use it up.

I do not know what Nikon will do, what I know is that they deliver a few new cameras every year. However it seems unlikely they will offer a new version or a lower price on D800 as there is yet no other camera available in the same category. So they would only be competing with their own products if they did, and that makes no sense business wise.

On Amazon, 1 & 6 & 13 all ship with no lens. Slight variations in accessories and bag. 13 smells like a better bag. Research the sellers - 1 is sold and shipped by Amazon, 6 & 13 are sold by Cameta Camera.

Ah, yes; I missed that point: Even though sold by Amazon it is supplied by another store. That makes sense.

What about the 200 shutter releases anybody heard of that?

The D800 is already available in two flavors, 800 and the 800E. I think it will be a while before you see either with a significant price reduction. You may want to consider a factory refurbished unit that would save you some money. My opinion would be to stick with someone like B&H as they will stand behind whatever they sell you.
BTW I think someone was overstating the 200 click remark. I've never heard of anything like that. They typically send floor demos back to the factory to be refurbished or they have to sell them as used. Once the camera comes out of the box and the shutter is released it becomes a used camera unless returned to be refurbished. I know there are some shady characters out there who may sell something as new that isn't but that's not legit. Stick with the well established suppliers.

Absolutely research the sellers. I believe if you go to Amazon, at different times, you will get different prices based on your ZIP Code and Amazon history. I've done that a few times, and finally got a price I was happy with. Maybe some others have had the same experience. Just to set the record straight, I am very happy with Amazon.

What are you looking to get out of the upgrade? I ask because I have debated the same thing. I am using a D300. It still works really well. Not convinced I need to go FF. I would like the higher ISO capabilities, but at this point sitting tight waiting for a D400.

Thanks Pepper; there seems to be agreement that the current $200 off is a good deal for the near to mid future, so I am a go on that.

Interesting, I will check it out. Although I was very disappointed when Amazon stopped their 30 day price match (they would give you the difference if the price dropped within 30 days of your purchase) I agree that Amazon is pretty good as far as seller. Ps: They could stand to improve their packaging though. Sometimes the expensive stuff comes in a box with almost no pad packing to protect the item from the shippers.
