I have no experience with hotel pools. I would think some kind of chemical treatment would ne necessary.

Regarding the pools, the hotels I stayed at were chlorinated. Having been a pool man for years I was interested in them too. Personally I think that a swimming pool would have to be otherwise algae would take over immideately. But rivers, lakes ponds I'd stay out of! Also, when it comes to the water I'd just play it safe because sometimes the restaraunt waiter will lie so just play it safe and don't make the mistake I made one hot day... I bought an ice cream cone without thinking that they are water. I was up every 20 minutes all night in the bathroom. Fortunately they had a toilet instead of the slot in the floor!
