The VR1 is the lens with the big brass plate on it. Around $1500 used.

The VRII has no plate and is closer to $2000 used.

Mine is the brass plate, VR1. If you can get one you will be very happy with it. I have thought of and on about trading mine and getting the VR2 but then I think why would I want to do that? Good luck with your quest. ;)

If I remember correctly the vr1 still zooms to 180 actual whereas I have read the vr2 does not, not sure if this is accurate though. Maybe someone will pipe in and set me straight?

Both lenses zoom between 70mm and 200mm at f2.8 I have no idea what you mean about 180. :)

Many zoom lenses do not reach their full zoom at close focusing distances and reports are that the VRII is one of the worst. But at infinity focus it is at or very close to 200 mm. The VRI is reportedly much nearer 200 mm even at close focusing distances. All this really means is that you may have to move slightly closer to the subject to get the same frame filling view with the VRII. Think of having a 135 mm lens on one camera and a 200 mm lens on an identical second camera. The perspective will be slightly different but if you move a bit closer to the subject with the 135 you can make the subject fill just as much of the frame. In actual practice, I don't think you would notice the difference. And remember, this effect is only at close focusing distances. As you approach infinity focus, both of the 70-200s reach very close to the same focal length. I use the VRI and have for maybe 10 years with excellent results, but I would trade it for the VRII in a second if someone were silly enough to make that offer. Hope that helps.

It's definitely a scam. Don't touch it.

Many zoom lenses do not reach their full zoom at c... (show quote)

Thanks for jumping in. This is what I had read and your comment of it not really being a problem is great since the VR does help improve the lens fstop s some.

You want the VR II if you are using, or planning to move to, a camera with a FX (full frame) sensor. The VR I does not properly cover the full frame, so there are nasty vignetting problems.

If you're sticking to DX (non-full frame), the VR I might actually serve your purposes better since it is a stronger telephoto at close focus distances.

Hope that helps.
