I don't think I'll get anything bigger than a 70-300 - I shot a few test shots with the mirrored 500 with a tripod collar and the balance seemed fine - But I sure like the stability of this old timer. If anything I will upgrade the ball head.
I use (the Bogen equivalent of Manfrotto) 055PRO + 410 geared head with a 555B leveling center column. The rated weight capacity is 11 pounds. I've never had a problem with gear blowing over, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. If I have to leave the camera to take a meter reading or for any other reason, I can spread the legs wider (lowering center of gravity and decreasing moment of inertia) although once I achiever a level base, I prefer to pin the legs with a trio of narrow wickets or three lead outriggers. Of course, this is only necessary for the Toyo. With the center leveling post and geared head, leveling takes seconds with the μ4/3. In eastern Nevada, the fierce winds will blow just about anything over and tripods offer little stability, so I use a monopod abd faster speeds. I never use the Toyo in Elko County unless shooting from cover. The only time I did so was when I had my Jeep and special low profile mounts on the hood and front fenders.

Hi all I have an older Manfrotto ART 055 aluminum tripod does anyone know what the weight capacity is ?? ive searched the manfrotto site but cant seem to find this exact model . This tripod seems quite sturdy - would I gain anything by going to a Carbon Fibre tripod other than the lighter weight ?? Id really like to hear opinions on this tripod Perhaps someone has a link for info as well ?? all i can find online is info on the newer 055 models.
I have a Manfrotto ART 055 with #395 Ball head which I purchased 23 years ago. I have had a Discovery lens attached to my Pentax K1000 film rig which weighed approximately 12.5 lbs . The only problem I had was very windy conditions but the weight of my camera bag was enough to counter the wind. I now use it with my Canon setup and have no problems BUT I am still saving for the new carbon fiber 055 pro as I have mobility problems and the lighter tripod would be advantageous.I hope this helps in some small way.

thanks for the help from all ive contacted manfrotto waiting for an answer short of climbing on top of this thing to see if it handles my 200lb frame not sure what the rating is
The physics involved in a tripod suggest that almost any tripod will carry heavy weight. If you're worried, test it with a bag of sand or rocks. I have 80 year old tripods I think would carry a 35mm and probably a heavier camera but I wouldn't trust them in a wind.
