Hi all I have an older Manfrotto ART 055 aluminum tripod does anyone know what the weight capacity is ?? ive searched the manfrotto site but cant seem to find this exact model . This tripod seems quite sturdy - would I gain anything by going to a Carbon Fibre tripod other than the lighter weight ?? Id really like to hear opinions on this tripod Perhaps someone has a link for info as well ?? all i can find online is info on the newer 055 models.

Here is a link to the tripod. Looks like the load capacity is a little over 15 Lbs. http://www.manfrotto.us/055xprob-pro-tripod-black.

I don't know if this is the newer one though.

Do you think there is that much difference between the 2? What do you see as the differences from yours to the new model?

Oh! So there are probably big differences! I guess you will have to contact Manfrotto

I have the 055, probably a newer one, but what I do notice is now I have a good head for it so the camera is actually firmly attached to the tripod, is the aluminium legs transmit a noticeable amount of vibrations to the camera. From what I read the carbon legs would be less prone to this

To the question of whether to upgrade - what head do you use currently? If you can handle the weight I'd definitely look at getting a decent head for it, you can keep that if you upgrade the legs later

All 055s except the Pro support 4kg; the pro supports 7.

Would that compute to 10 lb and close to 17 lb?
that is a lot of camera & lens
I have a very old Manrfotto at least 20 yrs - talk about solid - I got it at a camera swap meet for $25 - it had a movie head on it and I just recently replaced that with a ball head - best move I could have made with a tripod.

4kg = 8.8#
7kg = 15.4#

I've seen people put large format cameras on a 10# head; I'll stick with a 20-25, not because my Toyo is neat that heavy, but because of the torque at full extension. For 35mm size, I don't think it makes any difference with a short lens, but, with a 100-400 or 200-500, I'd want a strong head.

I don't think I'll get anything bigger than a 70-300 - I shot a few test shots with the mirrored 500 with a tripod collar and the balance seemed fine - But I sure like the stability of this old timer. If anything I will upgrade the ball head.
