They were out again this morning - about 7:30 AM. I got off a few shots before they disappeared under the trees.

These shots don't show the whole group. Just wait until the chicks start hatching. Occasionally they fly up on the roof. There's quite a racket when they start running around.

Thanks.

Thanks Georgie. Maybe I'll post some with the older chicks when they start coming around. We rarely see the really young birds. I suspect they stay back under the trees where the hawks won't spot them.

I sometimes wonder if we are being over run with them.
They are every where in our region and have become a traffic hazard in some places. The males, at this time of year, are chasing people out walking and we notice when ever they come into our yard, all the other birds disappear.
They have very sharp spurs on their legs which can injure people or pets. So, be careful when you are out photogrhing.
They are protected by law in these parts -- can't hunt them or harass them in any way.
The danger for the turkey is that their population is exploding and some disease may kill off the species.

Pierre

Thanks Doddy. They're pretty amazing. What impresses me most is the height of the toms. I've come within 20 feet of them (sorry, no camera proof) and would guess they're close to 4' tall.

I've come fairly close but have never felt threatened. They usually just walk away. My dogs have enjoyed chasing them out of the yard, and we have witnessed how well they fly.

Disease may be a serious factor in limiting numbers since there don't seem to be many natural predators. I've seen coyotes try to catch them with no success. It's possible the nests are getting robbed enough to keep the population down.
